Squires are usually really good value. Agree with the_flamedeer_hunter1985 - definitely jazz over a precision. I had a precision once - NEVER again!
You can't go wrong with a jazz, I have quite a few fenders/squires bass guitars, Way better than the precision basses
It is a good price. I've been thinking about a bass to play about with. Was considering a precision.

They have it for 199 (£158) euros at thomann, just need to to spend another euro to get free uk postage.

http://www.thomann.de/gb/fender_cd60_ce_bk.htm

They also have the non-cutaway for about £97
Price now gone up to £173 and for preorder, have marked as expired but still seems to be alive :/
+1 for the yamaha F310, it's a better guitar for less money, the samick greg bennet guitars are good beginner's instruments as well. I've owned a few fenders, acoustic and electric and although some were good guitars they were all over priced, the big name builders have become lazy in recent years and with the advent of CNC machining even cheap guitars are very accurately built.

That said this is a better price than I've seen for this model so have some heat.

Ideal for a beginner who isn't sure if they'll keep up playing or they'll give up, but if someone is looking for a gift for someone who already plays, they should spend a bit more for something which at least has a solid top.

Not really....

An OK Guitar and one of Fenders best selling guitars but would spend a little extra on the Mahogany one as it is very very nice....saw someone gigging with one a few weeks ago and sounded nice. (The Mahogany one) or save yourself some money, if you don't need the pickup (As you'll need a PA/Amp as well to get the best out of it) as the normal one is only around £100 new.

And all black guitars are a pain to keep clean....

Personally prefer the Yamaha F310 (We have/tried both) for value which is another alternative if anyone is looking in this price range and a beginner shouldn't be buying sight unseen/untried anyway....

Marshall MG15FXMSDM Dave Mustaine Megastack £210.00 @Sounds Live

Hmm. A Marshall stack for £210? OK, it's solid-state (not valve), and only a mini-stack, but some reviews rate it quite highly (esp. if you want to re-create that Megadeath guitar sound). It's £84 che…

Any recommendations for a decent practice amp for 1/2 this price or less, a few reviews I've read recommend Vox & Roland?

You could check out this Redwood 5W valve combo for £89.

I've got the head version. There's a video

I've got the Roland Cube 20x which has it's moments. Very clean sound, some nice effects, tuner. Oddly I ended up using it for rehearsals playing bass and get a better sound for that than a small practice bass amp. (I don't push it too hard).

It's been used for violin at gigs (mic-ed up). I bought it for blues rehearsals and it's had quite a work out already, hardy and reliable. Saying that it depends what you are playing, stick it next to a valve amp and you notice that warm sound is missing.

Check reviews at Harmony Central or other guitar sites. Your question will have been asked there hundreds of times, a decent google search with your style, influences etc will probably find something.

Have to say, I don' regret buying it and it's earnt its keep many times over.
