Slow day? Language is used to command, to inform and to have fun. So, when someone who knows that it is more accurate to say "That'll teach them." says "That'll learn them.", he or she is just having ***fun***

Why not just admit you made a mistake instead of making up a little tale that nobody but yourself will believe?

It's a fairly common (I would have thought) jokey turn of phrase. I don't think there is really anything to admit to here. Just let it go.

It's a pretty common jokey phrase. People know it's grammatically incorrect, which is why it's funny.
