Very mixed reviews, but a good delivered price for a new release!
Speed Racer lives for racing. He is a born winner with an aggressive, instinctive, and fearless approach to the track. Having racked up victory after victory behind the wheel of his unstoppable Mach 5 vehicle, he faces the deadliest decision of his life - partner up with a rich mogul cheat for safety or risk his life to save the spirit of his sport and compete in the definitive, death-defying, cross country rally, The Crucible.

The death of his brother, the legendary Rex Racer (Scott Porter), in a mysterious racing accident ten years earlier has urged Speed (Emile Hirsch), the son of car-designer Pops Racer (John Goodman), to carry on his brother's legacy. Speed's own success results in the discovery that some of the biggest races are being fixed by a handful of ruthless sponsors led by the sinister Mr Royalton (Roger Allam). In the knowledge that Royalton will see to it that his Mach 5 will never cross a finishing line again if they do not join forces, Speed's fate hangs in the balance as he decides which path to take.

The Wachowski Brothers, creators of The Matrix trilogy, have produced the ultimate live-action adaptation of Tatsuo Yoshida's classic 1960s Japanese anime series Mach Go Go Go in this beautifully shot visual feast that will appeal to the whole family. Full of exciting, brilliantly-conceived races, primary-colour characterisations, and an irresistible sense of fun Speed Racer is an entertaining, superbly directed blockbuster that is unlike anything you have seen before.

I watched it on Monday and boy...what a film! It must be the most colourful film I've ever seen and perhaps, the most colourful film ever made. The special effects are truely outstanding. It will certainly give your TV a good workout. I can't imagine how awsome this film will be in Full HD. The film is over two hours long, but because it's so pacy, with the occasional slow-down, it was over in the blink of an eye. I'm gonna buy it when I get a Bluray player. I suggest you buy it too

Very rewarding from a colour and especially sound point of view. And as windoek says, it will be amazing in Full HD.

Story is a little difficult for little kids to follow, but makes it reasonably worthwhile watching for adults. Kids will just like the eye candy.

Hot!

Agreed with the two posts above - downloaded from Xbox marketplace a few weeks ago. Was expecting a typical Hollywood kids movie but I shouldn't have doubted it coming from directors of the Matrix. Non stop action, action, action with plenty of homage to the Japanese original cartoon. The visuals will burn your eyes out (in a good way). I'm no film critic so don't have the words to describe it but this is a great film for a bargain price.

I was looking forward to this film and took my nephew to see it this summer. He wanted to go home after about 20 minutes as he was bored to tears, but we stayed till the end and regretted it. It's a kids film at the end of the day and it has a sub plot about corruption and share prices in sport, that has more screen time than the races themselves. Granted the races were spectacular, but there just wasn't enough of them. Unless the DVD is a different cut I would avoid this film, although if you see it for a quid in poundland it might be worth a go as you can skip the boring bits and watch the ten minutes or so of race action.

My boy is absolutely Mad about speed racer. He saw the film aged 5 at the cinema - and has gone racing car mad - he's going to be a racing car driver now as a result ;-)

If you have a boy that is too - check out the argos prices for the speed racer toys - some have been greatly reduced!

Good film. Was going to buy it in BD format but unfortunately it's not in HD audio. May just get this 'normal' version.

looks absolutly stunning in 1080p for those of you who can get it. If not, get this anyway, wonderful film that anyone can enjoy :)

Good deal!

I've been told that if you're in to animation (like I am) this film is a must see - on a design level, I've heard its fantastic.

I remember when it was released Mark Kermode was one of the few critics who gave it a decent review.

its not such a hot deal - it was this price on preorder - by now it should be a fiver.

My lad (almost 5) loves the toys. Would he like the film or is he too young? Lots of great Speed Racer toys at Home Bargains too. We love Speed Racer Uno for £1.99. Bargain!

I think whether your boy loves the film or not really depends on him. I didn't know my son was mad about cars until we saw this film when he was 5 1/2. He went back to the cinema to watch it again - and we now have it on DVD for him to watch.

Alot of the story goes over the LO's head - but the film is visually pleasing and lots of action races. Think racing cars in battles!

It's not alot of money to lose - if you can afford to get the DVD.
