Be aware that Speedferries fast ferry SpeedOne was seized by Boulogne port authorities due to non-payment of port fees. This could be the end not only for Speedferries but als for chap fares across the channel.

Arrest of SpeedOne by the Port Authorities in Boulogne

Yesterday afternoon, shortly after 17:00 UK time, the Port authorities of Boulogne arrested SpeedFerries’ SpeedOne during its turnaround. The arrest was made on the basis of SpeedFerries Limited’s debts to the port in relation to port dues and taxes.

The arrest was totally unexpected, as the authorities had given written confirmation that no legal steps would be taken prior to a meeting planned for 10:00 today. At this meeting SpeedFerries in consultation with its bankers and financial advisors, were to present a proposal for a resolution of the issues relating to outstanding dues and taxes, as well as disputes with the Port regarding:

A) Substantial counterclaims towards the Port which have been entirely ignored by the French authorities, and

B) Serious competition and discriminatory issues in relation to the Port’s dealings with a French ferry operator preparing to start-up a Dover-Boulogne service.

The authorities informed the SpeedFerries staff on site that the arrest was carried out despite the written agreement, as “this would strengthen the negotiating position of the Port against SpeedFerries”.

As the actions of the Boulogne Port authorities are now proven to be unpredictable and inconsistent with their given guarantees, SpeedFerries finds itself in a position where it is unable to inform its customers, employees or business partners, of a firm date for the resumption of services.

The company deeply regrets this situation and asks everyone affected to accept our sincere apologies. Further statements will be issued when more information of substance becomes available.

SpeedFerries' Dover-Boulogne service grinds to halt

Andrew Spurrier, Paris - Friday 7 November 2008

THE SpeedFerrries catamaran ferry service between Dover and Boulogne-sur-Mer was at a standstill today after the company´s only vessel, SpeedOne, was seized in Boulogne on Thursday evening on the order of the local court of commerce.

The Boulogne chamber of commerce, which operates the port, said that it had applied for the seizure of the vessel against arrears in port dues run up by the ferry company.

It added that the vessel would be held until an agreement on the arrears had been reached with SpeedFerries.

"The Boulogne chamber of commerce is open to all solutions to resolve this situation favourably and rapidly in order for the service to resume as soon as possible," it said.

SpeedFerries said that the chamber´s action had been "totally unexpected".

Chief executive Curt Stavis said in a statement that he had a written assurance from the chamber that no legal action would be taken prior to a meeting due to take place on Friday morning at 1000 hrs.

"At this meeting, SpeedFerries, in consultation with its bankers and financial advisors, were to present a proposal for a resolution of the issues relating to outstanding dues and taxes, as well as disputes with the port," he said.

He said that the chamber had told local SpeedFerries personnel that they had decided to go ahead with the arrest, despite its undertaking to wait for today´s meeting to "strengthen the negotiating position of the port".

He apologised to the company´s customers but said that, given the chamber´s "unpredictable and inconsistent" behaviour, he was unable to give a firm date for a resumption of services.

He indicated that the company had other grievances against the chamber, including counter-claims which it said had been ignored and "serious competition and discriminatory issues" related to the planned start-up next year of a Boulogne-Dover ferry service by Louis Dreyfus Armateurs subsidiary LD Lines.

SpeedFerries has been operating between Dover and Boulogne since May 2004 but has never succeeded in consolidating its position through the addition of a second vessel.

I had a day crossing booked a while back to use up a flexi ticket before it expired and when we arrived at Dover the check-in girl said the weather was looking a bit dodgy to get back so we decided not to travel and she re-validated the ticket for another year. Very decent. We've used them many times with no problems and having been ripped off so many times by the other price-fixing cartel members operating across the Channel Speedferries should be supported not least for their brave stand. I guarantee you the only reason other operators are now offering bargain crossings is as a result of Speedferries denting their profits and a further attempt to try and put them out of business so they can then hoik the prices back up again. So maybe sometimes things go wrong, but you pays your money and you takes your choice.
i would go, just for the free car :)

Surely you mean the Toyboata?

The Toyboata flipped over. It was the Nissank that made it to France.

REFUND ? dear dear, no refund ! pay other operator & claim full amount other carrier back from head office, you paid a service it didnt happen & you had no choice but to pay another for service & your carrier must cover any out of pocket expenses ie...a a competitors rate that provided you the service they failed to

Where in law does it say you are allowed that from a ferry service for a protest causing a stoppage, or a technical difficulty which means you may have to wait, but less than 6 hours? T&Cs cover them and as far as I know, no law helps. I complained, I was told they have no legal obligation and won't help out.

Try Norfolkline - Dover Dunkirk.

Its a good service and you can even use wifi as you cross.

Hot drinks are a good price - and you get your second one half price with the receipt from your first.

Night crossings are about 20 - 25 quid on the net.

However - if you call up and offer the discount code "CSMA1007" as you are a member of the civil service (who issue the number) then it can drop the price to 30ish quid return for the cheap night crossings - avoid the weekend though.

Earlier in the year I got a return crossing for 18 quid using this.

I can second Try Norfolkline - Dover Dunkirk.Nice ferry and cheap when we booked.

however, it seems to have either dropped the cheaper prices or I'm unable to find them!

The prices for food/drinks on board are quite reasonable as well (keeping in mind you're a captive customer!)

Its a tenner too (each way in total) if you cycle. So a tenner each way covers you and your bike.

However - it annoys me when there is a day trip rate that is cheaper than a longer duration on - as it cannot cost them anything less to provide the service.
"for foot passengers to France"

Not that great cos it's quite a long swim :p

Is the discount not that you get a Flex ticket instead of a standard one?

So you can arrive 15 mins later for check in - and can change the date of your ticket once without cost?
I don't think so - when I visit the site there is a 20% off banner across the top of the page.
Is there a code to put in to get 20% off?

Thanks

Welcome to HotUKDeals blibblob2008! Have you used them before?

Yes, I've been working in France for over 3 years and use them regularly.

Highly recomended fast efficient and very cost effective way to get accross the channel.

Boulogne is a much nicer town to explore for daytrips/weekends than Calais too.

Paris is about 2.5hrs drive from Boulogne

The only negative is the ferry can be choppy when the sea is rough - but it only takes half an hourish - so much faster than a standard ferry.

They leave Dover from the old Hoverspeed hovercraft terminal now too, so even that is quicker to get to than the main ferry terminal.
Used them loads, highly recommended!

They also have multi-trip vouchers which expire TODAY!
