Go easy now, because I'm no expert on bikes, but I've been looking for a decent bike for my boy for quite a while, done my research, and think I've found a good deal here.
Ok, it's the 2009 model, but quality never goes out of style right, and besides - who would actually know?
There is also a girls one, 2010 model for £176 + £10 shipping here: http://www.totalfitnessbath.co.uk/products/2010_Specialized_Girls_Hotrock_20-1838-0.html
Here's a review: http://www.productsifter.com/KidsStuff/ChildrensBikes/Specialized-Hotrock-review.aspx
Ok, it's not the cheapest bike you can buy, but liek I said - it looks liek a good deal for a DECENT bike to me!

Both excellent bikes, I'd say that in the long run the Specialized could actually work out cheaper because it will retain (a small) resale value, because of the Specialized name. It depends on your boy, if he's likely to scratch it to bits and destroy it then neither will sell for much in a couple of years time.

Also, looking at the specs, the 2009 bike looks a better bet than the 2011 one, better fork and more 'named' components.

Depends on how old your lad is. Mine has just turned 9 and i got him this one:

I'm guessing by the wheel size yours is a little younger. If so I probably wouldn't bother spending as much. the weight won't be an issue as he will be too young to pick it up anyway. Buy him some cheap rubbish until he can ride a bike that will last him more than 18 months.

I didn't add the picture - someone "helped"...

So is this actually as good then? I'm not bothered about the make or resale value, as I probably wont get round to selling it anyway, but I want a lightweight bike, so that little man can keep up! Anyone else got any thoughts on the carrera?

I'm looking for his eight birthday - getting a 24" one, but just thought the 20" ones loked like a good deal, that's why I posted! Don't really know anything about Saracen bikes, but that looks like a good deal - so thanks!

What a shame - the Enduro Expert in the pic is about three and a half grand; now that really would be a hot UK deal...
