What are SRS like to deal with, I've never come across them?
Can't believe these are so cheap with the cashback, I my get one instead of the Olympus M10 while they're so much cheaper
How does the 35-100 lens (that's bundled in the twin lens package with these guys) compare to Olympus's 40-150?

Haven't used them myself, but they have very good reviews..

Nice deal. I notice the GX8 is also in the £200 cashback promotion for anyone who is wanting one of those

Good from what I can gather.
Can't believe this is cold. I bought one. Delighted!
The body only is a great deal if you already have lenses.
If I can live with the kit zoom I'll likely upgrade to the expensive Olympus 12-40/2.8 M.Zuiko PRO when I see a decent deal; lots of talk that it's a 'do everything' lens which could save a fortune on primes.
I'm gonna nip to my local John Lewis to see if they have these on display - I've had a play with the Olympus M10 and liked it, but these are crazy cheap in comparison. I'm not sure about the kit lens with these - I'm used to my effective 28-80 range on my current SLR and I think the 60mm might not be enough at the long end.

Hmm, wonder how this would behave with my gx7. It's M4/3 mount right?
Yes it is M4/3. I think IRRC correctly OIS is in the body on Olympus but in lenses on Panasonics? So that might be worth bearing in mind or at least checking out?

Thanks for the response. So all the e-Zoom stuff is built into the lens? Sounds good. Tempting!

The gx7 has OIS in some of its lenses, but also there's OIS to some extent in the body (although not as effective obvs). It definitely helps take away the little vibrations and shakes when using my Canon FD adapter and lenses.

Thanks :)
I bought mine from them last week via eBay. Great price, the only thing that was annoying, they sent it with parcel force and in a plastic bag, which means the lens box got damaged :(

Is this the kit lens that came with the OM-D? If so it's stupendously good, especially for the money.
This is probably the best m4/3 kit lens there is, but it's not stupendously good. You could be thinking of the 12-40 f2.8, which is in a different league.

The 12-40mm 2.8f is not really comparable at 7 times the price!

I'd definitely buy this if m4/3 cameras weren't so damn useless (_;)

Luckily they're not so you're good to go ;-)

You are splitting hairs by saying that even at even at £999 its not a deal...Lidl deals, for example,no problem getting hot even at normal price...its not getting hot mostly of many other reason than because its the same price everywhere..people vote just on the pricetag, don't bother read description, or even just for the sake to vote cold...the site is not swamped from this sort of deals, but with penny saving deals that noone want to waste his time(unless had nothing else to do)...if you could read between the lines, that's the reason letting posts from Chinese sellers because the site was getting boring...I was hoping on this thread to read useful comments instead of petty argument..about your comment on the camera, for smone whos seriously after a ff camera and is not tied with a system, imo this is no brainer, offers a lot more bang for your buck from the drop feeding competition, that's enough for me to be a hot deal....teething problems, I prefer Pentax than NiCaSo to back me up.. everybody with a little common sense understand that Pentax knows that has to cover the extra mile and will be very careful with their first step in the ff market
It's not getting hot because it's the recommended pre-release price and because it's the same price everywhere else. It's not a hot deal. Tough if you don't like it, but that's the reality.
Your rant is virtually unreadable. Try writing in sentences. Paragraphs would help. Break the text up a bit. Then it might be worth reading.
On second thoughts, don't bother. It doesn't look like the content is worth the effort.
on the other hand, your content behind the written lines is quite apparent....

English is obviously not your first language. That doesn't even make sense!
All you have managed to do is prove yourself to be a complete muppet. Just another idiot to add to the ignore list.
Bye bye.

Not sure why some people are voting this down. Good camera for the money.
I'm not a fan of mft format. But lens availability makes it a good system to buy into.
Brilliant bit of kit and a steal at this price..
After a E-M5 Mark II myself, but this is a cheap entry into MFT with in-body IS. (Pick up some ex-kit Panasonic/Olympus lenses from a well known auction site.)

Yes and that is reflected in the price - this was a 10 grand set up in 2010...
As for the ken Rockwell link, Mikeyfive, you don't do yourself any favors do you...
Scoffing camera experts, who'd have thunk it?
... Oh right, it's a review you don't agree with so it must be wrong, and I'm sure you know much more about cameras than KR.
It's a funny thing about reviews and reviewers, if it indulges your several thousand pound purchase then it's always right.
What utter tosh you talk. KR is probably the most divisive person in photography... I personally have no feelings about him either way as I never read his reviews but I certainly don't view him as a camera expert, I'll leave hero worship to you... As an aside I have used this camera several times but have no vested interest as I don't own one.
Have you used one?

I have the 45mm and panny 20 + 14mm - the 45 is as good as they say.
Cannot justify this lens deal for myself as just a casual snapper!!
As I said, this isn't for everyone... Personally even if I stopped working as a photographer 3 years ago, I still like to have high-end gear.
I love the value/performance of those primes! :3 My next lens should be the 25mm from Oly.

I have an OM 50mm f1.8 but not considered the adapter. so manybon ebay. is there a particular one to go for?
thanks for the tip re cex.
I have found some also on cash converters.
Thanks for your advice. Very kind
All the adaptors are more or less the same. Get the cheapest one and it will be fine. Just prepare for manual focusing and exposure. The first is easy, the second not so much. :-P
If you don't mind spending £150, my vote is still on the 45mm! I can't recommend that lens enough :D

Bought one when Amazon dropped the price to £160. As a purchaser of strictly compact cameras it's the first "real" camera that I've ever bought. As far as I'm concerned it's a very good camera to actually learn about digital photography and fiddle with too. I've bought a super cheap cctv lens and c-mount to Q adaptor to muck around with after discovering this thing called bokeh and how to achieve the effect. I've also got a TV Zoom lens from Toyo or something that looks very similar to this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Toyo-Optics-TV-Zoom-Lens-12-5-75mm-F-18-excellent-condition-/150980908924 , which I rescued from a discarded microscope setup at my work place. And now I've got the lens to work on the Q10 using the C to PQ adapter. It's fun messing around with lenses and learning as you go along. I never knew any of this stuff before I bought the Q10 and I wouldn't have if I'd bought something with a fixed lens setup I suppose.

You guys who say buy the Sony cam or any other better fixed lens cam over this, well, I guess you know your stuff, but as a total newbie to photography the Q10 is the nuts......and I like fiddling with it :-D. It's a JOKE!!!!

This camera is a good learning tool and stepping stone to maybe something better when you actually know what the f*ck you're doing........ which admittedly I don't! :-). But I'm slowly but surely getting there thanks to the Q10.

glorified compact camera .. with compact like results
buy a sony hx50 (for example) and get so very very very much more

It is definitely a strange little beast. The handling is quite dslr-like, but in a titchy package. IQ wise, it's on a par, if not slightly better than the HX50 in low light because the Sony has more pixels jammed into the same space. The Q7 is a nice step up, too, and I expect the Q8 or whatever comes next to be even better.

But generally I agree - it's an odd camera, and you can get 'better' in other packages, though perhaps not the versatility (eg using a 50mm f1.4 with an adapter to get a blazing fast 275mm equivalent) and I'd argue that this is definitely more 'fun' than a lot of other cameras.

its not just the effective focal length thats affected by crop factor but the effective aperture
so its like 5.1 apsc equiv wideopen, probably want it stopped down some too so not really

Not quite -
The focal length and aperture remain unchanged - A 50mm f1.4 is always going to be a 50mm f1.4 - using it on a cropped sensor doesn't change that.
What does change is the field of view, which is where things change in relation to aperture - with a 50mm f1.4 on a cropped sensor, you get greater depth of field.
Basically, depth of field is inversely proportional to crop factor.

So, if you put a 50mm f1.4 on, say a micro four thirds camera (for easy maths!) and shoot wide open, you get an equivalent field of view of 100mm (2x50), the light gathering of an f1.4 lens (no change), and the depth of field of an f2.8 (2x1.4).

I'm practical terms on the Pentax Q, it means that where on a full frame camera shooting with a very fast telephoto lens you would have a very narrow area in focus (a person's eyes might be in focus, but the tip of their nose out of focus) you get the same view and light gathering (so the same shutter speed and ISO) but with more in focus (from in front of their nose to the back of their head).

That's why if you like blurred backgrounds, crop sensors aren't so popular - you need proportionally faster lenses to get the same amount of blur.

Hope that helps!

well oops yeah i guess but then the thing is as image quality is lower than on dslr etc you could just bump the iso up along with stopping down the lens to get the same effect

You'll need MUCH larger pockets, though!
The other factor, for extreme telephoto, is cost - a 300mm f2.8 costs a lot more than the equivalent lens on a Q.

As for the image quality, there's definitely a trade off, but you can still get good results - The birding pool on Flickr has some impressive examples - https://www.flickr.com/groups/pentaxqbirding/

but thats part of the point, you dont need that 300mm 2.8 lens, a standard longish zoom with raised iso will give the same reach and shutter speed

guess i can see the point with longer reach though where the difference is alot bigger

it's quirky and quaint but once the novelty factor wears off you're left (I believe) with a very poor camera.
poor by comparison to top end compacts
my experience is that the hx50 (for one) gives better results
stuff magazine swear by it (the hx50)

Just found a decent deal on the HX50... A little bit tempted as it looks pretty good. This site encourages far too much spending!
HX50, where is the decent deal? :)

Just got mine today and 1st impressions are:

Menu system is really confusing & limited, then I realised there custom menu which needs to be unlocked before you can play with some of the 'advanced' customisations. Several of the buttons (say FN or REC) can be rebound for your own favourites.

pros
So good customisation for a entry level body
ISO performance improvement over my GF3 (ISO1600 is usable)
White balance is more accurate
Sensor stabilization

cons
flash is not built in but comes as a (included) addon and only points forward
build feels less solid than the GF3 (which was never great anyway)
it's red
the right neck strap lug gets in the way of your hand

On a side note mine (the cheaper accessories missing ebay listing) did come with the USB/AV cables (although the listing stated otherwise) and the £13 3rd party battery seems to work

Thats what Godsakes was taking about, read the descrip. carefully. Not the same package as you have to buy bits to use it.

SO NO BATTERY, CHARGER, STRAP, USB & AV LEAD, MANUAL AND SOFTWARE INCLUDED..

Battery and Charger...£15, Strap £2, usb lead £3, av lead £4...... So total of £ 24. Both manual and software are free to download...Total outlay of £143, still £26 less than this deal...................

Not knocking the camera... I have an E-P3 which I use when I can't be bothered to lug a DSLR around.... but the E-P range is becoming old hat now, and that's NOT a bargain. BTW, no need to shout and blaspheme.... stay calm, you'll live longer ;)

Not quite, those aren't prices for genuine Olympus items. Some people also prefer a paper manual. So possibly £26 less if you don't mind 3rd party accessories and a DL manual. Look at the item description on Ebay eagle eyes, I copied and pasted ;)

...and some would prefer to buy 3rd party accessories and save money. As to the manual, most people would take this as a back up body, so they'd as likely have a manual anyway, or have the nous to operate a relatively simple to use micro 4/3 camera,.. You pays your money and you makes your choice.

" I copied and pasted "..... well, aren't you the clever one, technology, eh?!(_;)

The fact is its not the same package. Price up exactly the same items then make your comparison. Yeah, its amazing, theres also this thing called getting your facts straight before replying, makes you look less stupid. You should try it some time.

Isn't there a G6 making the G5 outdated?

non-argument as q10 was 'outdated' in terms of performance on inception

as for the nex stuff it was just an example as its what i have so what i know. but as for lens size lens: sensor ratio q10 is way higher
with size being less of an issue the only real reason to go with these is cost? or i think with adaptor and long lenses might be nice

well done this one got heat
probably actually a worse deal than the cold voted ones due to the extra lens costing more than the difference

lens is pretty chunky one it though, slightly more than 1cm less bulk than eg nex+18-55kit lens but almost 2cm fatter than nex+16-50powerzoom!

The nex is widely commented on in the press for it's large (even more disproportionate sized lens system). Try your size comparison with a 50mm-ish (35mm equiv lens). The 8.5mm for the Q would cost be had for an effective price of £5 above the 16-50mm nex kit. The 35mm e-mount lens is a further £192 and it is way bigger too. Then try again with a telezoom if you want to see disproportionate!

The other deal was posted and expired (not expired by me) even though it is still available.

The nex is NOT just £40 more NOW.

Alas, the cheapest Nex with said powerzoom is also £85 fatter!
sure its more expensive right now but its been as little as 40quid more
obviously you are right about the price - this is cheaper
but the whole point of these is surely the size which is cancelled out by disproportionate sized lens
i still think the other deal is better (329 one) as you will probably want the extra reach at some point
