Standby saver sockets are dull, but I bought this for the IR remote: it can learn the signal from any IR remote control button. So you might control a fan or lights using your TV/Universal remote, without needing a separate RF controller.
Also more flexible operation than the usual all-or-nothing switching ("4 permanent standby sockets and 2 switchable between standby and mains for user flexibility").
