Hey, yeah this is table top war style gaming :D You will need to buy the main set as well to be able to play

Thoroughly recommend this game, it's really tactical and a lot of fun. You do need a playmat and a lot more ships to make it truly great but recommend it to anyone.

Never played it, but crikey, some of the ships seem expensive!

We have the main set and there seem to be more expansions.... courtesy of the husband no doubt :D Had such fun playing it the last time but we do need a much bigger table... either that or he was cheating :D :')

Over £50 for one extra ship (2 if you count the TIE bomber) doesn't seem like good value to me at all and that's coming from someone who has a sizable collection of board games (proper ones, not just Monopoly and Cluedo) AND who likes the base game.

No doubt there's people who have the cash and the passion for something like this but it just seems wildly overpriced to me.

I can see where your coming from, but this is recommended for players who have the base game and want to expand, regarding the price this set is huge in comparrison to others :D

It's not quite as bad as GW. With a standard 100 point limit you can only really have 3-4 smaller ships or 2 large ones (Millennium falcon is around 50 for example). The only reason to get lots of ships is if you really want to play much larger point games or you want lots of choice (each model already comes with different options). The starter set gives you around 50 points each side (which is enough to play with)

I've got X Wing minatures coming for Christmas (the Force Awakens starter set). Is it worth getting some of the other ships straight away? Which are the best ones to get?

I can't justify it, but undoubtedly a hot price. Worth a Flubit as well: got it down to £48 from Wordery, who I've used before and had no problems with.

Unless you're going into tournaments I'd say just get what you like in terms of styles and characters. It's mainly original trilogy but my son loves Rebels so I bought the Ghost, which is a great set as it has a mini fighter in the Phantom piece and loads of different loadouts. There's increasingly ships from the new films in the line now, if that's more your thing.

A friend of mine owns a gaming store and seems to think there's legs in this one, a la Pokemon and Magic, from the size of the fandom and the extended universe on offer, as opposed to some of the flash-in-the-pan games under license. (Of course if he's looking to hook people he would say that!!)

Before investing in expansions, you should try the core set out yourself first, or at least watch some videos of it being played on YT to get a feel for the gameplay. I watched this years ago, which helped me decide if it was something I'd be interested in, (TableTop with Wil Wheaton):

From memory, it has a match setup with the Millenium Falcon / Slave I, to give you an idea of what a larger (than the core set) point limit game is like.

We got started recently, some great guides on YouTube and a few blogs but unless your looking at tournaments go with the rule of cool and just ones you like the look of as it's a game and fun first and foremost. You also don't need many on the table so it can be a relatively cheap minis game.
My 12 year old son also loves having the models for display in his room as well when they are not in use as they are really detailed and painted up well.
