Steam is a digital distribution service like Gamersgate, Impulse, Direct2drive, EA store etc. If you haven't used one before then the idea is that you buy the games as normal but download them when you want to install them instead of getting the disk out of the box. Unlike the others Steam has the steam client program which needs to run in the background to play the game and adds 'extras' (either features or annoyances depending on whether you want them).

Some of the games like borderlands are very new and will need a moderately good PC to play them, others like Trine and Spore are designed to work with slower systems and city of heroes is several years old now so should also work on older computers (or slower new computers).

There no difference between the normal and GOTY editions for L4D on PC as far as I know.

EDIT: Comparing prices it looks like Spore is the only outstanding deal of this lot. How well does Spore work with steam? I know there were reports of problems with some digital distribution services on launch.

i bought left 4 dead 2, it sucks compared to the first

Only difference is, with the CD version you get an updated version (don't have so much to download). Where as with the vanilla version you get what was first shipped (**** loads of updating to do).

If your getting it from steam it will make no difference what so ever.
#18
Yeah the GOTY edition just contains the free DLC so do not be fooled into paying extra for it on the PC or 360. Think I might pick it up (despite getting the sequel yesterday) as it's a good price along with Borderlands.

This 5 day Steam sale is costing me a small fortune.

No one has mentioned either the THQ Complete Pack or the LucasArts Premier Pack. These are excellent value because of the sheer number of games included. You get:

Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts
Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor
Frontlines™: Fuel of War™
Full Spectrum Warrior
Full Spectrum Warrior: Ten Hammers

Red Faction II
Red Faction Guerrilla
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl
Saints Row 2
Titan Quest
Titan Quest - Immortal Throne
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Gold Edition
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Dark Crusade

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II

Total cost for all games if bought individually - £209.82
Usual package price - £52.99

Indiana Jones® and the Last Crusade™

Lucidity™
Star Wars Galaxies™: The Complete Online Adventures
Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast
Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II
Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy

Star Wars Starfighter™
Star Wars: Dark Forces
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
The Dig®
The Secret of Monkey Island™: Special Edition

I think the THQ one is especially great value, particulary if you're an RTS fan - you get every Company of Heroes game plus every Dawn of War game, not to mention every Red Faction game plus some great others like Saints Row 2 and STALKER. Some of them are such recent releases that you'd paid around £20 individually but you get that whole lot for £26.49!

They have been mentioned in other deals. There's a deal for the entire week of Steam Deals, and there's also a deal for those two packs I think...

Top deal. Picked up L4D. Been waiting on this since playing the demo weekend.

Be aware that it is 4897Mb in size.

I have moved my steam directory to my I drive *virtual dir link), but my C drive only has 2.5Gb free and this is the drive it checks for free space, so I cant actually install it yet! LOL
#31
Bought Left4Dead. HUGE bargain.

Cheers OP.
#32
Is there any way to check the size of the downloads before you buy them?
I only have a 5 gig allowance & I get caned if I go over that.

Not as far as I know, it's one of the problems with steam. Other digital download services list sizes, but steam's downloads can sometimes be a lot bigger so that method won't always be accurate (but would at least allow you to dismiss some).

If you've only got 5GB then a lot of them are going to be too big.
#34
I'm going to download some of my purchases at work, and use the 'backup' feature to bring them home. Is that an option for you?

Ok found the answer to my own question, posted here incase anyone else finds it useful. Yes I do have another drive, but have clearly take a complicated route to this solution. Heres the simple solution:

"I'd like to have Steam install my games on a different location on my hard drive or to a different drive altogether. How can I do this?"

Considering you can buy these games used for less and have some resale, ability to move to other machines It just find steam (and pc gamming) a complete waste of time.
#39
Good deal - I always wanted to try Left 4 Dead and will give Steam a chance.
A little disappointed that the download speed seems to be set below 2Mbps but no major problem.

I'm still torn, but I prefer the original group of characters, I also love many of the survival areas in L4D. The sequel's melee weapons are of no interest to me as I dual pistol.

A preowned copy of L4D is completely useless as you won't be able to play online  It's a scorching price and well worth picking up.
