Britain's comic genius, Stephen Fry, travels around each of America's states in his black London cab in order to discover, in his own inimitable style, what makes the country unique and to get under the skin of American life. His journey across the vast country takes him to a whiskey distillery in Kentucky, lava fields in Hawaii, an Amish community in Wisconsin and a brothel in Nevada, as well as hunting in New York State, sailing on an America's Cup boat in Rhode Island, basket weaving with Navajo Indians and meeting environmental activists in Oregon. Stephen is shown the country by its proud citizens as he drives across the continent uncovering the idiosyncrasies that makes each state individual and the similarities that make America distinct.

What's that all about ?

What's that all about ?

They have a "garden" with graves sectioned off so that they can record how long and under what conditions a body has been around. The records are used for forensic research and legal data.

They had one corpse stored in a plastic bag in a bin.

I'm a great Stephen Fry fan but IMO the series was too short and too much was edited out to fit the series run/time slot. Very enjoyable all the same.

Good TV! I agree that i wish he had covered more, but is still a great watch. In fact it has been one of the factors that has influenced me in trying to decide whether or not to travel the states for a few months.

I felt like it could have been longer, but there will be another series on BBC4 called "more Fry In America" soon with all the stuff that was cut for editorial/series restrictions...

Yeah, the "Body Farm"...........used for forensics studies. People donate their bodies for use, and also unclaimed, "John and Jane Does" are taken there.

I'm glad that Stephen Fry liked America. Most British are so mean to Americans, but when you go there, they treat us like gods.

They're not all bad.

Good show.

The American people that we met were so polite and sociable. Their level of service is second to none.

But their fascination with and use of guns is alarming.

On one visit we found a church open and wandered inside. Unfortunately, the door had been left unlocked by mistake and we were threatened with arrest by two policeman.

Our son was 10 years old and running around the site playing. My heart was in my mouth when these two coppers appeared with guns ready and our son perhaps looking as though he had robbed the place and was running off.

However, I suspect and hope that the vast majority of Americans do not own guns.

Pity they didn't rescind his passport when he was there.
