Agreed, someone obviously taking offence to him denouncing god X)
#5
fools, i'm an athiest, hawkings is the biggest con artist of the era, and sits along side einstein with disproven theory. Sorry this guy spouts crap that he cannot prove and surrounds it with gobbledegook to the easily impressed on HUKD and The Daily Mail . Many of ensteins theories have been disproven and this guy spouts crap of stuff that has no proof and HAS been disproven.

He is nothing but tabloid fodder. Denounce god while lookin like you should have your life ended years ago, sounds more bitter and twisted to me that being objective.

Stephen Hawkings said it , it must be true ! No aliens visited the earth.

Wait Hawkings was under the flypass of a UFO

Wait Hawkings said that aliens would come and vist the earth and view us as food.

Its annoying that this fake talks with such authority and morons suck it up.

You can't really be 100% sure of that can you? Humans have only been around for roughly 200,000 years, maybe they visited earth before we were here?

They are already here, haven't you seen insects and some of those weird creatures in the depths of the oceans.

I never said that stuff about aliens, hawking did as a statement of fact, thats why he is as arrogant as the pope.

To understand the meaning of a higher power is like to grab a raindrop from a heavy shower.
I do believe, however, that we have all evolved;
Such logic cannot be detested, mocked or flawed.
But would not a method to induce free will be kindled by a god?

I can set up a feeble argument then disprove it - wow thats all hes done
the big bang theory is just that theory with gaping holes in it - black holes in fact
90% of matter is unknown
in an infinite universe your telling me there no chance of a creator and sustainer of the universe?

the universe is probably teaming with life

and the wars on the globe have more to do with Evil agendas and evil agents like those mad scientist that werent even sure the the 1st nuclear test may not set of a chain reaction to destroy te entire planet -
Religion are about morality and doing good but majority are not following there own religions

The deal is ridiculous The Grand Design - without a Grand designer? - Oh Really how stupid do the so called elites think we are exactly???
#14
I don't buy into religion but I find it interesting, rather like his theories.
Recent series 'Into The Universe' is well worth a watch.

It`s a book, that`s available at a decent price from Amazon WH. Smith and Waterstones.
Go to a relevant forum and express your opinions there.

I've enjoyed his other books so I'll be ordering this one, thanks!

Peeps, he's a theoretical physicist, what exactly are you expecting?!
#17
Ahhh, the passionate yet poorly informed - all very amusing!

Thanks for the post OP and for the WHSmith deal - ordered! cheers.
#18
I hope this is a good book, bit disappointed they've used the 'god' angle to get PR, as I don't think that it is necessarily that relevant. The book will be about a lot more than that.

Nothing new under the sun. Paul talked about this in Romans 1 nearly 2000 thousand years ago:

18For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.

24Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.

26For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.

28And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32Though they know God’s decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

Looks like a good deal, if you want to read it. I don't. Mainly because I was too thick to understand he last one.

As for the God angle. Well, I don't think I'm likely to agree with Hawkins at all - but that doesn't mean I have to be rude and pour abuse on him. It is a very important discussion that both us believers and unbelievers should engage in with a listening heart and mind. But let's not do book burnings (or trash beliefs with virtual soundbites.)

Why would anyone believe in the Bible when it was actually written 500 years after Jesus supposedly lived? So, people like Philh777 would want us all believe a book that tells a story about events that happened 5 centuries beforehand, and which would have been passed down the generations by word of mouth because hardly anybody could read or write during those times.

Tell me Phil, do we have to take everything that the Bible says as truth? Because if that is so, do you go around with just one type of clothing, because according to the Bible, man should only wear one type of cloth. Also, have you ever Googled one of the those sites which reveal the many contradictions in the Bible?

During the last couple of hundred years, people were killed for making similar claims that Jesus made because they would have been called witches. Do you really believe that somebody could part the sea?

And the funny thing is the Church gets all upset at movies like Harry Potter, when they believe that a man could turn water to wine and rocks to bread. The ONLY reason the Bible was invented was to scare people so that they kept within the law. And if we want to talk about mediumship and the Jesus Army getting all worked up about it - what about when Jesus supposedly rose up from the dead? Doesnt the Bible say that you should not talk to the dead? So thats a contradiction in itself!

Agreed. One of the quotes from his book is this:

"Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist."

Well, glad that's settled then.

I'm agnostic, bordering on atheist, but that is some serious drivel of the highest order.

For people interested in physics and Cosmic origins a much better (probably) book would be the Fabric of the Cosmos by Brian Greene. Very accessible and well written.

For the theists amongst us; regardless of whether we have a full understanding of the origins of the Universe and everything in it, including the sapient humans, you still need a proper corporeal reason to believe in a God.
Assuming a God made everything that exists is just an easy answer to an incredibly complex and difficult to probe problem.

This book doesn't get released till next week so you nor anyone else here has read it yet. So you cannot really compare it to theory's written in another book - yet.

Hence my "probably". Which is based purely on how highly I regard that book.

Man, I know why he is in a wheel chair, I can say he is bitter at life and God because of his terrible position, who wouldnt ? Of course you would be angry at god. This hardly makes him objectionable, and if he wants to discuss god in this way they he is open to all sorts of views on his personal situation.

And FYI I know a guy affected with thalidimite quite well who has hardly any legs or arms. This guy is crazy, man he is constantly attacking god whenever he can and screaming abuse. Of course, I dont blame him either for his anger at god.

Philosophy v science. I suppose having been gifted the intelligence it is only logical for humans to try to find the 'creator' or the universal law of physics. In my opinion it is a fruitless exercise and until then God will do for me.

If you believe in the ancient astronaut theory, God was an alien anyway who seeded Earth :)

The funniest thing I find about the Bible is that its about one person who claimed he was the son of God. No mass sighting of a supreme being, just people believing a persons story. There are more people who have seen UFOs than have seen God and yet people who have had UFO encounters are deemed to be crackpots.

I'm actually disabled Muscular Atrophy and i have to concur - a fellow disabled guy in mi college days said because he's disable he didn't believe in God
people seam to miss the higher meaning all the time..

Hawkins has changed his view from a rational one to a rather daft one - as reported
why would anyone want to waste time and a £10 note
but hay that up to people to make their own judgement

there is a concerted effort being made to stifle thought and the honour of humanity.

it boils down to this you either believe everything is a fluke or everything for a purpose
what is our goal?
so we have got to this crazy age were we think we are at the top point of civilisation
And what is it that scientist tell us - Everything is but by chance and occurs on its own...
yeah just eat sleep die - our great grand fathers we apes...
Is that really our mission?
Science is supposed to be to solve problems - but now the elite use it to destroy us all internally and externally.
And tell the masses dont believe in a creator
that is the height of conceit -

you cant get a book without somebody writing it, then printing it then sellinIg it
the Universe is much more complex and that can happen on its own?

My mate was at Cambridge a few years back and Hawking apprently used to go around all the boozers and check their disabled facilities- if they werent up to scratch he would have them hauled over the coals.
Also, he told my mate to 'get out of my way' over his electronic voice thing. Hes a really unpleasant man by all accounts.

The ideas and thoughts in this thread are very basic and predictable.
If a person is physically disabled the chances they will use this negativeness to disprove the possibility of god is insubstantial.
There are many who undergo similar or even greater life threatening illnesses who dedicate their thoughts and ability to carry on in the name of god. To counteract this argument posts will appear from both genuinely disabled and those claiming to be disabled, that support the idea that Stephen Hawking writes theoretical physics in defiance of god because this is what they go through etc.
Most genuine people who are disabled, do not use this as an argument against physics or any other subject in a forum or otherwise to prove a point.
Irrelevant if you believe or do not believe, Stephen Hawking writes for the public who question these matters in layman's terms, as everyone does not even hold a physics A level.
Please do not rant and about who is right or wrong, as everybody is entitled to an opinion or you may think your thoughts are based on facts. can we please leave the finger pointing out, and make decisions on matter we know about instead of assumptions on individuals thoughts when publishing a book.

There are some who hopefully without the use of piracy have personal access to his book or excerpts through the lectures he performs, as many non-fiction writers invite opinions and additions to their writing to invited individuals.

Excerpt from Fabric of the Cosmos:

"If I were to hazard a guess on future developments, I'd imagine that the background-independent techniques developed by the loop quantum gravity community will be adapted to string theory, paving the way for a string formulation that is background independent. And that's the spark, I
suspect, that will ignite a third super string revolution in which, I'm optimistic, many of the remaining deep mysteries will be solved"

It may well be fruitless - But why arbitrarily assign a God as the answer? If you're living your life, subscribing to something (religion/whatever) without any basis, you are wasting a significant amount of time from the one life you'll ever live.

Erm, actually most of it can't be proven - its called Theoretical Physics because it is theory. For example, Hawkings cannot prove the existence of a multiverse any more than anyone can prove the existence of a God.

Even though its deemed as theoretical physics the process to the conclusion attained is more for this hypothesis is achieved by many hours and more and more scientists are banding together the to attain the Theory of Everything as a collective than the various factions in religions, who claim their interpretation is true.
Show me religious leaders who constantly surreptitiously attain the existence of God to show the world not their own delegation, then maybe agnostics and atheists may not seem so heartless and cold calculating as you may think. We need to start thinking of the human race as a collective instead of creating barriers and thinking people who question the existence of God as evil.
