Im afraid he is correct and if it was taken from 30 year old mastertapes then that would be fine, but the BBC destroyed all the original recordings and re-recorded over them, so a large number of episodes are taken from collectors sources reel to reel recorders etc, the quality is dreadfull, some episodes are barely visable.

Its nothing to do with them being 30 years old its that fact that the BBC mass wiped the original tapes and these copies were obtained from old reel to reel tapes, so the picture in a large number of episodes is very grainy something like a 1920s movie.
All the instalments from the first 1970 series and all but two from the second that were originally made in colour only survive in the form of black and white domestic videotape recordings, they were copies made from the master tapes by an engineer at the BBC using a Shibadan SV-700 half-inch reel-to-reel b/w video recorder, a forerunner of the video cassette recorder.

Steptoe is showing as £20 for me.

If the Sherlock Holmes Complete is the Jeremy Brett one (new packaging) it was £28 in store at Sainsbury's at London Colney last week. Still a good price though.

i used to love watching this!

Regardless of who recorded them or sourced them from , if you like Steptoe & want what is available then you buy the collection . I have watched them on BBC , I never stopped to say , " ooh that looks grainy " , they are what they are , classic comedy .

Simple really .

Don't think I can - this is from the Tesco Grocery site not the Entertainment one as in the link posted above. I had to sign in to view it but it uses frames (?) so there doesn't appear to be a direct page for it. It's still there at £20 though.

2p cheaper than the Entertainment price, £4:98 dearer than the Grocery price though, as posted by Whizzkid in the OP.

Really? I bought this exact box set last year for £25 off eBay and the quality seemed fine to me, bearing in mind the history. I really didn't find it an issue at all, certainly not to the level some people have said on here!

Voted hot for a great price for some real classic TV comedy.

I am looking & can't see anything , even a search brings nothing up .

I wonder if the grocery website is regionalised ?

I can't link to the grocery section as it just links to the homepage. If you just search for "steptoe" in the search box it should come up, if not I guess the store you get your deliveries from doesn't hold stock of it.

Seems to be that , no other explanation for not seeing it on a search .
