This was posted a couple of months ago for £199 + P&P. Now an even better deal at £20 less. 7'' LCD, 30 GB wireless ready, webcam, 3 in 1 media reader 1 GHz processor, 512 ram, 1.1kg (inc battery…

People are probably voting cold as they think it's a poor spec laptop and not a netbook!
voted hot, as i think its quite a good price.

pointless? nah. the eee is a little sluggish loading up xp. I can only imagine the time it would take this thing with it needing to spin up a hdd, and a slower cpu. Would drive me up the wall. My gf's eee is only just bearable.

And this is the main downside of having a HDD and XP on a netbook - my Acer Aspire One starts from cold in about 15 seconds and is online about 10 seconds after that. Who needs 30gb hard drive to surf the net?

Seems excellent with XP (instead of Linux) & a 30Gb hard drive.

Pointless comparing the CPUs for these type of systems . Because of XP, this will do more than the EEE 701 & the storage is almost 10x more

OK I'm officially confused!

This was put up two months ago at £199 +P&P and reached 240 degrees. Now it's £20 cheaper it's been in negative territory ever since I put it up.

It's an ultra portable, 30GB hard drive with Windows and built in wifi. Would those who have voted cold please tell me why it is such a bad deal?

Cheers.

I was gonna wait for the eec pc 901 out 01/07/08 (with xp not linux)

s'pose this HCL thing does have a big hardrive 30Gb compared with the 901's 12 Gb....not enough for me to buy tho so will stick with the asus I think

(oh and yes I realise the linux version has 20Gb but I prefer xp)

Far better can be had for the money..voted cold on this one

such as? Available now?

An ultra mobile with XP and 30GB hard drive. Let me know and I will buy it.
At the moment this looks the ebst ultra mobile available.

Its in the same breed as the HPO Mini-nop which costs £350. They both use the new Via all in one chipsets.

This one using the ULV C7 1.0 Ghz which uses 3.5 watts maximum So should be better on battery life.
Dont forget the new breed of browsers such as Opera are ultra fast anyway so for simple office and browsing usage this will be fine.
The VX800 chipset also has mpeg acceleration so hopefully Utube, Iplayer etc will be fine too.

I recently got a 9" EEE pc, personally id struggle with any resolution smaller than 1024x600 since webpages only just about fit on that, anything less and you'd either have to have everything really tiny or keep side scrolling

you can use Opera, it can fit whole web page in small screens, used it in my 4.2" XDA Exec.

Had a total of 4 bikes over several years as our three lads have grown up, every one has arrived fine without problems and I'd recommend Sterling House to anyone looking for bikes on a budget.

Plus being lads the bikes get a fair amount of abuse and they are all still functioning!
Super Deluxe !!

I've heard very bad reviews about the quality of bikes and service from the company. You really are paying for the cheapest bike and components. Sure they are cheap but will struggle to pass 1 year with regular use. Do yourself a favour and buy a decent bike that can last you. Bought a Marin Hawkhill, not a great bike by any standards but came with quality components and it has lasted me well over 5 years already!

Sorry I've had to vote cold. I know I'm gonna get bashed for this but I don't see much point in paying the lowest prices, when for not much more you could get 2 decent bikes. If you're struggling to get bikes I'd buy second hand.

I wouldn't trust the bike, the safety gear or anything from this deal.

There's alot of people saying these bikes are no good...

But I need your opinion:

If I need a bike to cycle about 20-30 mins each day back and from my house to my place of work, will this do? I live in central London and I'll be cycling on roads and some bike paths. I don't intend to ride it to the countryside or enter any marathons... just get to work.

You'll be bouncing around getting nowhere! If you really want a cheap bike to cycle across London find your nearest Halfords and buy a £99 Apollo bike. At least you can take it back every week to be repaired. For £200 you can get a Carrera Subway from Halfords which is actually half decent.
I bought 2 bikes off them last summer - 1 was a nice bike and the other one was cr*p. The first one took around a week to arrive and the second one came after 6 weeks of nagging - kept getting told that they'll be delivered at the end of the week!!

Cant comment about the quality of the bikes as they got nicked after from our shed after riding them only a few times :-(

You need to be aware that the bikes are seconds and you don't get a choice of which bike you get. The company they get their bikes from - Universal Cycles - just send out whatever they've got,

Their customer service is totally shambolic - the customer is always wrong.

HTH
You still wont get a Full-sus bike for under the £1000.

Bikes that are at £500 are almost exclusively hardtails, as they are the half decent makes and they know they cant sell full-sus bikes of any decent sort of quality in this price range.
Unless you're an enthusiast, compete or have money to throw around spending £1000 on a bike is a waste of money. You can pick up a decent bike for most peoples needs under £500 or you could have a go at building one yourself.
If it says "Alloy Frame", its as heavy as one that says "Steel Frame".
Steel is an alloy, so they can advertise it lol.

Dual suspension for under £1000 is not worth it and will not work like it really should.
As above buy a hard tail.

Disc brakes at this price are little more than decorations.

Surely these must be better than the similarily priced ones with suspension?

if you must buy a cheap and cheerful bike, then yes, buy something like this rather than a full suspension. it will bw lighter, less to go wrong, and the (little)money saved by the manufacturer no putting the suspension on, generally means slightly better gears and brakes.
Surely these must be better than the similarily priced ones with suspension?
This seems a good deal, anyone got one of these bikes aand can vouch for them?

With bikes you really do get what you pay for. If you think how much effort and materials go into making this, plus profit margin, you can only imagine the quality of the materials must be pretty poor.

or you could get 1 bike for £49.99 plus postage.

Thanks Kommunist :)

I just thought people may be interested in my experience with S/H, with Christmas coming up.
At the time I read it, the issue was still ongoing and I wasn't really sure whether I should take the risk and buy off them. So I decided against. But now it looks like the problem has been resolved. :)
Kommunist
I think that they were first mentioned on page 23 and the official response from SH is on page 25.
Interesting read. After reading that it would not put me off buying from them again.
Thanks for the link

Yep, that's right. People had money fraudulently taken off their credit cards and then they realised that all of them were using Sterlin House. AFAIR, one of their payment processing companies leaked credit card numbers and personal data to fraudsters. If you read on, you'll find how the story went, see SH responses to it, etc.
Now, I am not saying that SH are fraudsters, don't get me wrong - I am just explaining why I didn't bought from them. This story was still going on when I needed a bike.

I'm interested in this but I've just got to page 10 out of 46 and I cannot see anything yet.
What page does it mention S/H? Soz but I don't have time to read every post. :-(
