I'd say 2 years is good for the price, I was hoping they'd have a nice 3 year, but WD are definitely on it unfortunately.
Was a strange day, Linux Mint destructed after upgrading the kernel because of the Dirty Cow Patch, then my MB decided to update and hosed all the settings but didn't actually update the bios?

After manually upgrading MB I just installed Linux Arch with Cinnamon, not as pretty as Mint but hopefully will not break as much as Mint did.

Yep I did use the drives serial numbers I also spoke to someone at WD and also checked online, it appears the drives have the same warranty as the enclosure, 2 years. Not sure how I feel about it.
Unlucky on the server death - tried it with a live disk? RE the warranty - was that from checking the serial numbers of the bare 3.5" drives Yaradabbadoo? The Reds normally have a 3 year I think?
Arrived today has a 2 year warranty on the drives so thats good.
But my motherboard or NVME drive or probably Linux Mint gave up the will to live today:-)

Im going to bed I hate computers!
Will do when it arrives, word of warning, I was on the phone for over 1 hour trying to get them to honour the voucher they sent me!

From what I have read the enclosure will hardware encrypt the drives so if that fails the only way to get the data back is to pay them WD a fee.

Basically if you need the drives and not the enclosure this would be worth it otherwise I would not bother.

Having recently invested in a NAS (Synology) I'd prefer to spend a little more and go for a RAID mirroring setup. At least then if one of the drives fails you've got a duplicate of the data whilst you get that drive fixed. Yes there's the location risk (so if one drive gets eaten by the dog then so could the other) but it does at least ensure that everything is automatically backed up.

I say this everytime, FAILED ONCE WILL FAIL AGAIN, maybe I just FAIL in convincing people. Had a few of these in the past of different sizes, all went wrong.
IF WD HAD ANY FAITH THE WARRANTY WOULD BE LONGER, it's cheap for that reason, but your data your loss!

No its recertified, you don't know what failed, if it even failed, or if anything had to be replaced. It has to be recertified and fully tested at the factory. I have been using a recertified drive for a few years and it's fine I also got another 4 months ago and is fine, on 24/7.

You should never lose important data when a drive fails because if its important you shouldn't have one Copy of it in one place.

EVERY hard drive ever made is subject to fail.....
I agree completely... but.... if WD had any faith in their products it wouldn't come with just a poxy 6 month warranty.

didn't realise it was a fork of owncloud. I've had that on my NAS drive for a while until i switched to another service.
To add... not everyone will need 1TB. I make do with a 8GB sd card - more than enough space for sharing a few files between home and work. And of course silent, cheaper to buy and run, arguably less fire risk.
MaxRazor
So all you need is the hard drive a raspberry pi and a few programmes to do the same job ?

Yes but this makes your life a bit easier, at the cost of perhaps a few more pounds than buying separately. Or it might even be cheaper.

Nextcloud was forked from Owncloud a few months ago, taking most of the key developers with it. Nextcloud might turn out to be better. I have been running Owncloud on a Sheevaplug (like a Pi) for several years to be honest it has become a buggy overweight gin palace.

This product would be good for those who want a self hosted cloud with less of the DIY. The server can also run other stuff if they want, aswell as Nextcloud.

Wow Western Digital going to great lengths in having dormant accounts for 2 years just to sell a few hard disks. I think that to be pretty unlikely.

They don't have any stock.
It says "in stock" and can be added to basket. Not sure how much more in stock they could get.

See the other posting for this deal and I have ordered one and they don't have a delivery date as they have run out. Might say in stock but good luck getting one.

Can anyone advise if this has the plex app installed?
What I'd ideally like to do is use this as an always on Plex server.

This won't have Plex. The newer Synology NAS drives do have Plex pre-installed though - I have a DS115 and it has the Plex app, but i've never used it because I prefer Kodi which, for me, does exactly the same thing.

Those are all fine for clients... I was wanting to use this as a server, albeit a non-transcoding one. There's stuff here about Plex on a MyCould drive:

Had a surprise delivery attempt today but was out. Such a terrible company will never order from them again. I am leaving my paypal dispute in place until i see the item.

Update: received 3 emails tonight.
First: Unable to cancel order and payment taken already.
Second: Order was dispatched on 16 August
Third: Cancellation has been processed and returns number include in email

Tracking data shows dispatch today (22nd August) with delivery on Wednesday 24th. Looks like it may be back in stock.
Bought 3 different size drives from them, all have been going well for over a year now with no problems.
Luck of the draw I suppose.
My understanding is that you can cancel any time before despatch according to my correspondence with them. I have now been told that they have cancelled my order but they are unsure as to whether it is too late to cancel even though they dont have the item and have no idea when it will be back in stock.

You can always refuse delivery when the time comes, unless of course you are out and your neighbour takes it in for your.

I have explained to them that I am updating HYD with the progress of my order and that I would never buy from them again.

My order confirmation email told me that the item would be dispatched the same day or the following day. The order can be cancelled with a refund immeditaely but their systems dont seem to be able to cope.

Raising a paypal dispute seems like the way to go.

Good luck.

I've aborted my extended test on USB3 as it wasn't going that much quicker. Phoned WD support and they said 23 hours is normal considering the size of the drive, as long as the end result was a pass. What they did suggest was to run the Complete Drive Test using the WD Drive Utilities, which should be used on the My Book. Kicked if off ad seems to be running much quick. May run write zeros and see how long that takes and then extended test in Data Lifeguard again.
Still in 2 minds whether to send this back for a refund... any thoughts?
What software are you even running to test it?
Extended Test was using WD Data Lifeguard tool
Anyway, the WD Drive Utilities Complete Drive Test finished earlier, after running for 5 hours. Failed. Sending drive back.

Best idea. Hopefully they'll send you a decent one. Just shows it pays to do the long test.

Yeah cos thats going to happen.
I couldn't bare the Moon landing in my front garden either.
Are you seriously suggesting hard-drive failure is as likely as the moon landing in your garden?
2 x 8TB failing on the same day? Yes.

It's more likely than people think, also even if the 2nd drive does not fail on exactly the same day the addational stress on the drive caused by the rebuild onto a replacement drive (After all you have to read all of the data to re-mirror it) can also cause it to fail.

If the data is important then have a backup copy stored elsewhere, ideally offsite if possible.

If you don't want to pay out for one of these storage services or don't trust them with your data maybe consider putting a NAS as a relatives house as a lot of them now support syncing/backup over the internet, and some of them can even do a block level backup (Meaning if you change 1MB of data in a 10GB set of data, it only needs to transfer that 1MB change over the internet not the whole 10GB again)

It does largely depend on what the data is, if it's just something you downloaded you probably don't need to go to those lengths, but if it's photos you've taken whilst on holiday once lost you'll never get those back.

Are you seriously suggesting hard-drive failure is as likely as the moon landing in your garden?
2 x 8TB failing on the same day? Yes.
It's quite likely! Think about it: you are running two drives from the same production charge, with exactly the same access pattern, heated to the same temp, switched on the same number of times.
These two drives are certainly MUCH MORE likely to fail on the same day than two random drives with uncorrelated use. It's like identical twins with the same diet dying of the same cancer - it's entirely possible.
By that same logic they're more likely not to fail. Statistically most hard drives don't fail. So if by that logic being part of the same batch links their reliability your odds of having two good drives from the same batch are higher than having 2 bad drives from the same batch. Where as having them from different batches doubles your chances of one of those batches being bad. See making up odds and statistics is flawed, we're just applying what feels like logic to a problem and making wild speculation.
Odds of having a dodgy drive are about 5% historically speaking. Yes some times certain batches and models seem to have a higher failure rate like certain 3tb Seagate drives from a few years back. But the data isn't in on these drives yet to make any assumptions with, so historically speaking across many models and brands less than a 5% failure rate is typical.
No sense using guess work, voodoo or trying to moneyball the odds. Just take wise precautions with your data back up strategy like not relying on RAID as a backup, having more than one backup and having at least one off site and you'll be fine and prepared for the inevitable day you lose a disk so that you don't make an emotional association with that failure and create some kind of superstition as to it's cause like certain brands, big drives or buying from the same batch being at fault.
Phew it's good you don't work in statistics.

Obviously there are certain brands and makes that have worse failure statistics - you call that superstition? When you buy a car do you also claim that all makes are the same and looking at breakdown statistics is voodoo?

I claim that harddrives sometimes fail because of wear and tear, because they were heavily used and are now at the end of their lifespan. That alone increases the odds that two drives used together fail together compared to two random drives failing together.

Likewise, if you were driving two cars exactly the same every day it'd be much more likely they break down together.

Mine arrived yesterday. Installed firmware update and tried a diagnostic via the utilities menu... Hung at 90%. Goggled and it appears a common issue. I did a reset (the 2nd option of of the 3 reset options in the utilities) and now it completes the diagnostic fine.

good price however atrocious customer service took almost more than 2 months to refund a dishonerd discount code over charged me despite the invoice stating the correct value ,finally refunded after sending a letter before action then sent me another 20% off code afterwards as in the way of an apology , which of course didn't work !!! never again
I have 2 x 2tb portable drives for xbox 360 and xbox one and 2 x 4tb my clouds for plex media and 2 x 4tb my books as back up and another 2 x 2tb my books as backup for my synology nas which are all recertified from wd store and all work flawlessly. there are many a Easton for them to be resertified for example a customer returns one back to tesco after opening it and deciding they dont like it. tesco can not resell it as new because it's been used, therefore it goes back to wd and they sell it on as recertified. recertified does not necessarily mean it's a repair job.
Bought a 2TB re-certified drive last month from a deal posted on here for about £45.
Delivered promptly and packaged as if brand new with sticky plastic covers on a brand new case containing the drive.
First time I used it it kept dropping the connection to my pc.
Ran WD lifeguard tools and it reported 'too many bad sectors'.
Had to raise an RMA but to be fair it went without a hitch but decided against another.
In saying that, I'm having to chase them for a refund despite sending my drive back early last week.

Can you rip out wd elements drive to use in a nas
Recertified Mybooks have Green (or sometimes Blue) drives. The MyCloud units have Reds (labelled simply as NasWare).

People claiming WD make bad drives are talking out of the wrong hole - I have seven WD HDDs among my drives, three of which with 30,000+ hours on them (2 Greens and an Enterprise Black) - My Reds are less than two years old but haven't skipped a beat. In contrast, one of my Samsungs and two of my Seagates have died.
Got the last deal for the 3tb ones delivered for £44 each, two running now for last few months, one in my pc and the other in xbox one, no problems at all. Copying across from pc ssd, i get about 150meg a second via usb3. Way faster than my buffalo nas 20meg a second.

Bought 2 of the 3TB external drives back in May, 2 for £100 with the coupon. Arrived within a couple of days and working fine for now
read the previous deals on recertified WD drives, they come from a company in Ireland and loads of us never received the goods and had to fight to get our money back ,you have been warned .Worst customer service ever encountered
How is this a sale? These are their standard prices for recertified products.
Their recertified stuff gets posted constantly on here. It broke before and a 6 month warranty shows or gives little confidence for the consumer.

Received mine on Tuesday 5th July and looked brand new.
Connected up via usb and whilst copying files to it, it disconnected.
Ran lifeguard tools and that reported 'too many bad sectors' after about 15 minutes of testing.
In the process of returning.
Reckon they just pop them back into a factory new case, can't believe they'd miss major errors like that when 're-certifying' them.
Mine arrived, perfect like new
Mine Arrived this afternoon formatted it fine for use with my Zgemma tv box and working perfect so far so good
What software can I use to check if this recertified drive is new or not when I get it?

I'm sure I read you can use something to check the age since it was first used, and what about to check for bad sectors?

Thanks
I'm still undecided about this. Is it wise to buy a recertified one as your main backup?

Has any one had any problems with a re-certified hard drive? for the sake of £25 is it worth the risk?
Currys are doing this for £74.99 with a 5 year warranty.
can anyone tell me the difference between this and the wd 2tb my passport ultra drive?
whats happened to prices? 2.5 inch 2TB were £50 a few months back but seem to have crept up.
6 month warranty is a turn off rather buy new :(
Bought, will let you know if I have any issues, fault problems etc.
