Blue Lou, any chance you could PM me the text of what you asked Strato and what they replied with (obviously with any personal info removed). I was interested in doing the same as you but was going to take the free domain too.

Just confused why it's not possible to point a domain with another registrar to the space at strato?
Yes I did.. they do not offer hosting when the domain is with another registrar. I've decided to give it a miss because of this.
Have you tried emailing them instead?
I'm having problems..

they do not seem to have another way of hosting the website without your domain being attached to them..

I've paid £9 for two years for a .net domain with 1and1

Strato expect me to cancel the domain (lose out on the money) and pay them x amount so I can have it with them with £1 hosting. Their phone number doesn't work for me so Ihavn't been able to ask them many questions.
If anyone's got a Guinness Book Of World Records to hand, have a scan through it to find the holder of the Most Domain Names Held world record. It might be named something different to that ('tis years since I last had a poke through my copy), but if you find it, you should see NameZero as the record holder.

I bring this up because NameZero did a similar thing a few years ago. They offered a free domain name, and although you had to find your own hosting to go with it, it was a massive thing at the time because that was back in the days before the internet became free. Webhosting back then was incredibly expensive compared to today. Even Netscape, the precursor to Firefox, had to be paid for - RRP of £80, if memory serves. Anyway, millions of people signed up, and, as you can imagine, put Namezero into debt by a long way. But they'd planned for that. When they'd spent as much money as they could on registering domains, they pulled the plug on the free service, and offered people the chance to regain their domain for a massively inflated fee. Namezero's still in business, the scary thing is, they must've made enough money to stay afloat.

Anyway, I mention all this to make the point that webhosting costs a lot more than £1, especially when there's a domain name thrown in. All loss-leaders find a way to sting you at some point. This lot are fine if you want an online sandbox to play with to learn how to do interweb stuffs, but I'd rather prise my kneecaps off than use a service like theirs.

I looked at this back in May. Most of that software you can get for free anyway (legally) and I went with in the end as you only need to buy the domain name for a couple of quid or use your existing one.

It's a good deal if you're gonna scrap the lost after 12 months, but long term I wouldn't bother!
Dunno why this is cold either - seems a great deal.
The last deal from Strato was posted in May. Looks like they're offering it again. Signed up last month as it was only a pound, software arrived quickly, good service so far, but haven't used many of the extra's yet. voted hot + rep
why do people vote cold without leaving feedback?

For those of you got accounts in May 2007, don't forget to cancel if you don't need the service anymore. I believe renewal will be much higher.
If you are a UK individual (not business), you should be allowed to opt-out of having your details displayed though (the only thing that should then be shown is your name only) :?

For domains that's absolutely right. You can do it for others but it's slightly trickier.
Check with your domain registrar if they offer domain privacy..mosts do offer for free

Has anyone managed to successfully remove their details from the whois register? Here is the email I received when asking Customer Support about this:

We are not able to remove your personal details from the whois database.

Information about who is responsible for domain names is publicly available to allow rapid resolution of technical problems and to permit enforcement of consumer protection, trademark, and other laws. The registrar will make this information available to the public on a "Whois" site.

It is however possible to register a domain in the name of a third party, as long as they agree to accept responsibility -- ask your registrar for further details.

Hi Guys
Excuse my thickness here but it the photoshop the one that allows you to dodge and burn etc or is it only a taster package? I need it for a new career (eventually) as a portrait photographer and wondered if it was worth doing...?
A word of caution for those considering the hosting packages offered here - I've been emailing support for the last few days, trying to point my existing domains over to them. The only way they are able to accomodate this is if the domain is also transferred to them. They have no facility to allow you to add domains which you already own with another provider onto your service. This is the only company I've ever known who are unable to accommodate such a simple request, and one which I hadn't even considered wouldn't be an option.

Still a good deal, but be aware that the only way you'll get existing domains served from it is to either have a forward or transfer the name to them.
great package
You need to give one-month's written notice (and it must be signed) or else they will bill you 12 months in advance after the cheapo £1 year....remember this!!

According to the small print on the Enterprise package I just signed up for, the standard billing cycle is 3 months, so they should only bill 3 months in advance. Either way, a lot cheaper than the £30/month I was previously paying for hosting!
Well it worked for me :|
