Isn't this still riddled with issues with the servers?

I wanted this on launch but waited and the more I read about it the more it puts me off... like all the free updates for characters and costumes but apparently you have to buy them with in game credit which you earn and can take an age to build up enough for one character?

Can anyone comment on how it runs now and the amount of content it has available from the get go?

I have SFIV on Xbox One (Backwards compatible) which is keeping me entertained for now but keep wanting to buy this...

I'll try and cover all of the questions you've raised.

Capcom is working to make the server situation better and on the whole, matches online are good (beware playing people from overseas as the connection online can get laggy/sticky on occasion).

Yes you can unlock the extra characters in-game but as opposed to SFIV where you complete Arcade Mode with certain characters to unlock more of the roster, SFV does require you to use the in-game currency to unlock them. Each character costs 100,000 FM which is no small amount. It essentially encourages you to play through the game's cinematic story mode (regular and extra modes), do each character's story (essentially prologues), complete all of their trials, watch the character demonstrations (this yields easy FM and can be viewed quite quickly) and go through easy survival mode once with each character. That should net you enough FM to unlock about 5 of the available 8 DLC characters.

There is paid-for content too but its not essential as its mostly aesthetic stuff (tbh I haven't bought any of the premium costumes yet and will wait for a sale before I do).

If that sounds like a slog you could purchase the character pass for the first bunch of DLC characters. It was in a sale earlier in the year for £7.99 so you may want to wait for that to come around again (you're paying more after buying the base game but that is cheaper than buying each character and their premium costumes separately. If you were to do that you could end up spending up to £49.74!)

The above is of course an extreme example and had money to burn. If you enjoy playing local multiplayer (I do) then I think you'll enjoy it. Unlocking extra characters to expand that roster is helpful as I think the initial 16 you get are fun but you feel the size of that roster fairly quickly.

Pardon the rambling above but I hope this helps you somewhat.

I wish they hadn't made this a PS exclusive, Xbox Live is better suited for this type of game.

I was hoping the PC version was upto scratch, but the reviews on Steam put the online play much worst than the PS4 version, which itself is not exactly getting glowing reviews.

I gave up on Street Fighter 5 back in August of last year as Capcom are just useless and incompetent. From what I hear it still has server issues. Also the game just isn't that fun to play especially compared to Street Fighter 4 which ironically I still play as its so good. No chance I'll return to SFV as I'm completely over the game so I'll just play SF4 until Tekken 7 releases.

Absolute rubbish. Xbox Live wouldn't wouldn't make this game any better because Xbox Live, like PSN is just a gateway to Capcom's servers. If the host servers are **** then you will get a **** connection. Sony aren't using their own servers so have nothing to do with the quality of the netcode.

On the whole the Xbox Live is better than PSN myth is ancient now. I used Xbox Live almost exclusively on the 360 and apart from party chat didn't see what all the fuss was about when compared to PS3. Now I use PSN on the PS4 and I've never had an issue apart from one odd Xmas a few years ago where the service crashed for a couple of days. Sony actually extended everyone's membership by the affected days as compensation as well.

TLDR; Capcom have rubbish netcode and deserve the blame.

Personally I really like SFV but spend most of my time playing Guilty Gear. Netplay on the PC version is especially amazing. 2f delay with 1f of input lag is better than ps4 version is offline!

Those games are really dead as barely anyone buys them.

Niche games for sure but with stuff like discord you can always find a game. Also can't be that dead, Guilty Gear and Blazblue both main games at Evo this year.

Your pulling my leg. How are those two niche games the main games of evo? I thought the whole point of Evo was that it was mainly for Street Fighter.

The point of Evo is it's the world fighting game championships. There are multiple main games which have official tournaments then a bunch of unnofficial side tournaments for all manner of games. Plus, almost every fighting game is niche.

Mortal Kombat isn't niche.

Hence my comment almost. Aside from a few, most fighting games have almost zero mainstream presence.
