HMV give a 15% discount off your first order online with a student discount card which is obtianable from any HMV store. All you have to do is show something with a picture and expiry date (i.e ID card) and you get it.

I got it easily and my discount worked. You get a 10% discount thereafter both instore and online.

Does this apply to uni students as well? I ask 'cos some unis do not issue NUS cards to their students, so I guess I wanna know if being in possession of a NUS card is imperative for this deal?
#2
Yes, what I did was go in with my Student ID (simply photo-card of the uni - not nus card) and they handed me the discount card.

Yeah its for uni as well

in fact i think the only way you can get it is by showing a college/uni card with a picture as i dont know if NUS cards have a picture?

I just basically showed them my uni ID card and got the discount card
#4
will this work with their ps3 packages?
#5
I go a secondary school/college, I have just moved into 6th form and we don't get ID cards or anything :(
#6
Can you use the card online once you get it?

Any other shops give student discounts?
#7
bloody students always getting something for nothing
its the hard working tax payin people who should get the cards
#8
jagermeister, students become taxpayers, they aren't students forever!

I'm sure you'll be asking your cousin/brother/sister/friend/relative to use their card

well said jagermeister well said, totally agree :x

Yeah because im sure students dont form a large part of the people who pay taxes to run public services e.g. alcohol and tabbaco. Alot of students also work...
#11
Its called price discrimination. The best way a firm can maximise profits is by charging everyone what they are willing to pay. To do this they have to ensure they can separate the markets and this case its done by using a student ID card.

The same applies for concessions given to OAPs and children. I dont see people complaining there lol.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Price_discrimination

Also, why should HMV give a **** about whos paying taxes. After all its not the government that runs HMV.

Taxes on luxury goods isn't the same as heavy taxes on your pay pack... if you're a student your tax threshold is different...
#13
Students have always got a 10% discount at HMV, you just ask for a student discount when you pay and present your uni-card or NUS card....same in most big chain stores (Vrigin/GAME/etc).

So why should discounts on luxury goods be a problem then?

Not forgeting the fact that most students are most likely the ones to be paying higher taxes in the future.
#15
Actually students do pay taxes if they earn over 5k a year....exactly the same rules apply to any other non-student individual.

So the student tax break is actually myth, as you too would get it if you earnt under 5k. Students now also pay interest on their loans and the vast majority don't get grants....so there arn't really any goverment freebies for students these days.
#16
Does it work for all goods bought online, namely console hardware too? i.e. would I get 15% (£45) off an XBox 360 Elite?
#17
The nus extra card does have a picture

Yeah the other one does too. It's only the one that denotes your membership to the NUS that doesn't. (called the democracy card).

Chap who's at secondary school and 6th form @ you can apply for NUS card, which will get you student discount. They're £7.

calm down **** :giggle:

just in case anyone doesnt know, im studying with the ou at the age of 30 and ive just applied for a student card, every little helps :)

Students get subsidies in the form of these offers, NUS cards etc to encourage others to go into or back into further education which leads to better jobs, and therefore a better economy.

Anyone who actually puts the effort in to better themselves intellectually in further education after secondary school is helping them state and themselves...

"The discount does not apply to purchases of electronic gift cards, gift vouchers, e-gift vouchers, event tickets, games bundles, games hardware (all formats), all other non-games electronic hardware (e.g. digital music players), digital downloads and excludes postage and packing where applicable."

So no PS3 or Xbox bundles then...

is there a way to buy a NUS card? or just purchase the number, as thats all you need for online at HMV or Play.
#25
Its a bit cheeky but if you know a student who can get one of these cards, you can use it online even if you are not a student, just need to enter the number in your account details then your sorted ;) just get your student friend do go in on a different day and get themselves another one.

Are they strict about dates? My uni card doesn't have dates on it
#28
Whoa i cant believe this thread has gone so off topic

If you dont like students getting discounts this is not the place to post it, go to the misc forum please

Also there have been a few questions so ill try to answer them

1) This is not an NUS card, it is a special HMV discount card that can be used both instore and online - 15% discount of first order online and 10% off every other order both online and instore thereafter. It is easily used online with a 16 digit number on the card that needs to be used.

2) Seeing as an NUS card has a photo (wasnt sure but thanks to loupomm) just show it and they will give you the card. ANYTHING with a photo id and an expiry date needs to be shown, both need to be showing. A valid expiry date needs to be shown but even if you still have a couple of months left they will give it to you. A friend of mine got his 2 months before expiry on his card.

If your card doesnt have a expiry date on it, take some sort of letter that shows the term of your study, i asked at the till and they said that this was alright

Having an NUS card does not seem to work on the site, thats why they do this special HMV card - 4th question down on the FAQ - its free so no harm getting it

I guess an NUS card only allows you discount instore if you present it, not online has anyone tried?because in their FAQ it says it will not work

say your friend has a nus card and they get a hmv student card for you can you then use the hmv student card online ?
#30
Why dont you just get your friend to order the stuff for you?

That way its actually a student getting the discount, the way the offer is intended.:whistling:
#31
i dont have any student friends though, so thats why id buy the number if i could. if anyone has the ability to get one of these hmv cards, well an extra one id be interested.

or if someone has a UCAS number and they dont use play....
#32
^ Called fraud...
#33
I work for HMV and would just like to point out that from this year they are disassociating themselves from NUS, so all you need to provide is a student ID card with a photo and a valid expiry date.

Can I use a UCAS card and a letter dated this year from my school, i object to paying for a student ID aswell as a normal ID.

I asked this instore and they said it should be alright, might vary from store to store but they should do it, something with a photo and expiry is what they told me

Answered this already before in this thread, the only way is if you show some form of current documentation proving you are a student at particular college/university. I asked instore and they said it should be alright, try it whats the worst that could happen?
