At £293 inc Vat and delivery the quality magnesium alloy build and good spec of the DELL Vostro 1500 defies the budget tag. ( 2GB Ram Geforce 8400M GS, Celeron M 540 1.86Ghz)
The Geoforce 8400M itself is considered the entry level games add-on card and will make an OK stab at most games set to a low level. The graphics card is by far the most vital item when considering using any laptop for games. This appears to be the only sub £300 laptop in the UK with an added graphics processor.

The M540 is actually a single core CPU of the latest Core 2 architecture and this is actually rated in some charts to be faster than the older 3.6GHz Pentium 4.

Whist there is no sensible 'budget' CPU upgrade available you can add your own Build and Accessories items for an upgraded spec at near £330.20 inc vat and delivery.(get pre discount price to £299). This could be a the 8600GT, larger hard drive or Vista Business).

If buying any cheap laptop with games as a main purpose consider this equation discussed elsewhere on hotdeals :-
"A Celeron M540 with an upgraded Geforece 8600GT will run games faster than a Core 2 Duo with Geforce 8400M GS." NB £293 gets you the ok 8400M, not the faster 8600GT."
"In some sofware applications that only make use of 1 thread this would actually be faster than a Core 2 Duo 1.6. "

Isn't this just a standard dell deal?

Yeh, what I meant is that Dell always has deals like this. And they always get posted here.

I see what you mean.

However I posted this as I thought it was one of Dell's better ones.
I think and hope others do likewise. And Dell can be overpriced at times if chosen wrongly.

Personally I dont think Dells has ever had many free graphics upgrades on laptops.

I even saw another post asking what had happened to some of the Dell deals. He wanted a Vostro 400 and had not seen one for a while.

If it is bad for the price and I got it wrong please vote cold.

That £60 delivery charge really stings....definately worth upgrading to get to the free delivery price point.

This was cheaper last week; I ordered with 1GB RAM and the Logitech WebCam for £260.26.

you are right. Available for 2 days only EXPIRED. Actually seems to be part of this same offer.
Had a HOT OF 592

Dell do both good and bad deals. I'm grateful to members, like LadyEleanor, MikeT and others, who spend some of their valuable time to 'separate the wheat from the chaff' deals so to speak and post them on here. Even though I'm not always in the market for a new PC, plenty of members always will be ;-)

I'm looking for a new laptop and Dell deals are posted constantly and are usually more or less the same price once you upgrade to a decent level. I think I'm just Dell'd out that's all.

For £330.20 inclusive you can upgrade to the 160GB hard drive complete with the Kensington Ci 25m Notebook Optical Mouse and Logitech® QuickCam Pro 5000 included.

This deal with the single core processor seems to have expired. Can anyone confirm this please?
