Suede played intellectual high jinks with this, their debut album, employing provocative lyrics, a weighty, unknowing sexuality and the pointed angst of troubled teenagers the world over. The clever lure of their androgynous artwork combined tellingly with Brett Anderson's teasing flamboyance and dedicated (some might say studied) David Bowie air. However, they would have remained a one trick pony were it not for their stirring ability to put together some unashamedly great singles and adapt a host of subtle mood swings and arrangements that took Anderson's vocals to soaring new heights.

Suede: Brett Anderson (vocals); Bernard Butler (guitar, piano); Mat Osman (bass); Simon Gilbert (drums).
Additional personnel: Caroline Barnes, Shelley Van Loen (violin); Lynne Baker (viola); Trevor Burley (cello); Simon Clarke (tenor & baritone saxophones); Ed Buller (keyboards, synthesizer); Phil Overhead (percussion).

Inspired by '70s glam rock, Suede came up with just the shot in the arm that early-'90s English rock needed. They helped usher in the Britpop sound that gave birth to Blur, Oasis, Pulp, and countless others. Retaining those glam leanings, subsequent Suede records have fully explored the intersection of Gary Glitter and Mick Ronson with ever increasing power and drive, making them the natural heirs to the crown of David Bowie.

absolute classic album, great price...shame it never included "my insatiable one" was b-side to Drowners I think. My favourite band at the time without a shadow of doubt!

You can get a compilation of all their B-Sides up and including the "Coming Up" Album era on the double CD "Sci Fi Lullabies" and a bloody marvellous compilation that is too, one of those great bands that didn't put out a bad b-side

Classic album...although I managed to get from Zavvi just before they closed this and Dog Man Star for like £3.99 in an outer slip box with both CDs! This is still a great price for the first album and worth getting...now if only the band could have dropped that awful britpop tagging..they were so much more than that would suggest.
