in what way is this better than the Philips 5980 player which is available on Amazon for £10 more? Has it got USB 2.0?

usb 2 is very important for hd picture playback. With usb 1, the pictures take a lot of time to load up on the screen.
i have a 5980 and it is a great player, and it might look a little prettier too but i would say the only thing wrong with it is that its not usb 2 compatible

its not from amazon - so there is a chance it'll arrive and be the correct product
its £10 cheaper

Not sure about the usb 2.0 but its hard to find new electricals that haven't got 2.0 - its more or less the standard now.

I also purchased one yesterday, and have also found that it plays everything I throw in its way.

Tried my 8GB Kingston USB flash drive with a couple of DivX movies, this beauty played them a treat also upscaling them to true 1080p HD...

Does anybody know if you can plug in an external USB 500GB Hard drive and play from that?
#18
I nearly bought one of these last week from ebuyer. But I found out that allegedly if you have it connected to a display via HDMI and the mains supply is interrupted then the video output defaults back to scart. This may not sound a big deal but if you are like me and turn off your unused appliances at the socket then it would be a right pain in the backside.

Sorry mate I haven't got one to test it out! But a word of advice, personally I don't think it will. As it will be too much memory to read from. ;-)

Could you elaborate? if you set it to HDMI output and turn off the machine at the socket, for say a day, does it retain the settings?

Don't know the approx dimensions mate, but as you can see its not very big at all its just slightly bigger and thicker than a size of a CD/DVD case. :)

HOT - purchased!

I bought one of these from ebuyer last week (at £40 I might add...).

It upscales very well, picture is great at 720p (can't comment on 1080p as I have a cheap TV).
Has played all the DivX films I've thrown at it, including a bunch that I played via a USB stick.
Haven't tried MP4 as I never use the format anyway, but if anything else is to go by it should be fine.

It really is worth the money, I can't fault it at all to be honest.

According to reviews on another website it CAN play from a USB hard drive, though one user stated that he couldn't get it to recognise a partition greater than 256GB. Still, excellent for a £37 player if that's the case!
#33
Good deal - could someone please change the link in the OP - it still goes to Maplin's home page!

Ive got an older Sumvision DVD recorder and am far from happy with it, poor quality brand.

You may have noticed I've highlighted a word there.

I've had a few different pieces of Sumvision kit over the last couple of years, including mice, MP3 players, and DVD players (including the one in this deal), and to be honest I've been really happy with them all. No faults, no design flaws, no little niggles.....nothing at all.

On the other hand, I've bough kit made by big name brands that I've been less than happy with (my last Sony stereo was a pile of poop, but I have some other Sony stuff that I love), but these things happen...you can't really judge an entire brand from one poor product.

:?Now I'm really lost. Only ordered a Philips DVP5980 last week from Amazon (for £42 after using a £5 cashback voucher I had), awaiting delivery next week. Should I return it at my cost and order this one due to having USB 2.0 input? Anyway, are we certain this has USB 2 input. Also, can anyone elaborate that the picture can be fed to the TV via HDMI but the sound can be put through an amp? Thanks.
#37
excellent deal, cheapest price around... propz to bingsy for the coupon code
#38
voted hot , just what we've been looking for and a cracking price at SVP
#39
Ooooh should I buy this? I am kinda sick of always burning my Divx/AVI files on to a DVD-RW all the time.....

does anyone have the region free code ? i presume its not region free out of the box ?
