Got one of these works great. I have mine connected via eSATA although you still need the USB for the card reader. Speeds over eSATA are, as expected, blinding.
#3
Does it come with an eSATA cable?

I had one of these from Play.com, sure it was the same brand name but and older model (the one with a red base unit colour) and it lasted less than 20days before dying on me.

I have no luck with external HD Devices though, have previously had 3 x external 500GB HD's die and now this.

So you wouldn't need an esata cable I can just connect the hard drive on the dock straight to my laptop and boot in to it?

Should work but will have to connect directly to one of ya internal SATA ports. You need to make sure ya SATA allows hot swap too otherwise you will have to reboot to use a drive etc and won't be able to unplug it without a reboot or power off.

Depends on your PC, does it have an esata connection or are you connecting it to an internal sata connection.

eSata port

Edit

Should I go for this one instead?

No, all were Western Digital (I should point out they all didn't die at the same time, it was over a year or so).

Just bought one. Have a spare HD that for some reason, connected internally hasn't worked, so this is handy, paticularly with free delivery at the minute. I got free delivery at 09:50

Free delivery is till working!!

To hot swap the drives AHCI must also be enabled in the bios, this must have been done before windows was installed (on xp anyway) as enabling it after will crash windows.
#34
Ordered as have been looking at these for a while. Thanks Heat added.

"Maximum reliability by all copper wire and tripe shielding"

Shielding from tripe or shielded by tripe? It is important I know!
#36
i got one of these on offer there great just with 2.5" drives its been pretty poor for some reason.
#37
Are all external hard drives SATA ?

I have a 250gb drive in a Toshiba enclosure (Western D drive inside doh!) that is being tricky, and I think it is the enclosure not the drive (as eventually I can get it to work and various scans of the disk reveal no issues).

My thought was to install it as a slave as I've done that in the past and know how to do it, but this would be an easier solution and not one that takes permanent power from my internal power supply.

The dock is fine for say use every so often to get files off drives but I wouldn't use it as an everyday device.
I store my drives in these:

Why do you think this dock wouldn't be suitable for everyday use, out of interest?

Just ordered in time at midday-:)

Too late to warn people but these have awful build quality. I would avoid at any price personally.

Yeah they are crap build, but they do the job and are really convenient for techs like me!
