RRP £19.99

This would make a great Christmas gift. It is currently selling for £19.99 on Firebox.

The Sun Jar is a frosted glass jar with a solar cell inside that charges a battery (when the jar is left in sunlight) to power LED lights inside it. When switched on, the jar will automatically start to glow when it gets dark.

Original design by Tobias Wong
Glass jar, solar cell, battery and LED lights
100X100X160mm
While Sun Jars do make excellent outdoor lighting during the evenings, it is recommended that when not in use they should be stored indoors on a sunny window sill.
For best results, please leave the Sun Jar switched off whilst charging. Simply switch it to the on position when you would like it to glow. This conserves battery life and will leave it to illuminate when you need it to.

There are mixed reviews on Play, but the Firebox reviews are nearly all very positive. Seems like a good deal to me!

I have also seen these in high street gadget-type shops for £19.99. I had been considering getting one for a while, but hadn't seen them anywhere for less than the RRP until today :)

"Create Your Own Sun Jar: Lifehacker Edition

If dashboard cookies got you thinking about other ways to put the sun to work, here's a step-by-step guide to building sun-capturing jars that create outdoor lighting at a fraction of the retail cost.

The inspiration for this tutorial is a combination of the Instructables tutorial we posted about creating your own sun jar and some excellent comments on that Instructables tutorial (specifically from MagiWG, who tipped us off to the cheap and very suitable garden lights at Lowe's.)

Our searches for retail sun jars turned up prices ranging from $30-60 per unit. We were able to create all four sun jars for $44. Our total outlay:

4 jars @ 3.99
4 lamps @ 4.99
1 can frosting spray @ 7.99

We had the following construction supplies on hand:

Pliers
Large flat-head screwdriver
Small Phillips-head screwdriver
Packing tape

The construction of the jars is simple. The first one took about 15 minutes because we were being extra cautious during the disassembling process, but after that we ripped through the remaining three in another 15 minutes. Check out the gallery below for a step by step tutorial. If you'd prefer to see all the steps on a single page instead of a gallery format, just click here."

I love the idea of these, but"Sunjars" are poor quality. I've had 6 in total and of the 4 that worked out of the box, they all died within 6 months on my balcony, rusted up PCB because the rubber seals are not airtight (because the jars are so mishapen/cheap.

i might have a go at making some of these!!!

Got one for xmas last year...they are OKish, you get hardly any light from them and it doesn't last long especially in the winter.

There's a little more to it than that. The light in this one is solar powered.

It does actually say above that they're not recommended to be kept outdoors. The rubber seal will deteriorate in the full sunlight needed to charge them.

No, best to get a plug-in one as this is unlikely to last all night.

Yes we have both the Sun and Moon Jars in our daughter's room to act as a nighlight, which add a more natural atmosphere, than something plugged in to the wall. She adores them!

Well this has convinced me 100% I`m a grumpy old woman....
What the heck is the point of these..the jars are ugly who in their right mind would want one ..
Seems to me the credit crunch is a figment of my imagination if folks can think
of wasting hard earned cash on such sh**e....
