Have you ever wanted to go 1x10 speed on your mountain bike, but not lose all your gearing and granny gears, get rid of the front derailleur and left hand shifter, running only one chainring onthe front, again saving weight on the granny and larger chainring assuming you have a triple,

well sunrace have created a 11-42t cassette, so you don't need an expensive expander cog (usually £27-65) and to split your current XT cassette, to set it up, buy this sunrace cassette it's far easier, regular price is £56

The 42t is a bigger cog than shimano s regular largest cassette cog 34t or 36t and so in simple terms you have lower gearing , which means you can run a slightly larger chainring on the pedals crank, and so you get a wider range of gearing otherwise you would have to lose out on lower (i.e. No granny gears uphill) or higher gearing (spin out on the road, descents)

I'm surprised this is on uber components sale add promo code UBER30 at checkout to get this price and it seems to be free postage.

Ps. If you have a rear mech with a clutch switch then the current chainring should suffice, without a clutch switch, it's advisable to get a narrow/wide chainring,
Look at 30t/32t if you live in a hilly area or 34t flat, can be had for £15 on susperstar componets

I get £38.49 with the code for the 11-42. I am tempted.

I have a bike in pieces at the moment that I want to have a single chain ring at the front and 9 or 10 speed at the back. I've been looking at just get a narrow-wide for the front keeping the current 9 speed cassette but I was over compensating on the teeth at the front to get a equivalent gearing good enough for the road which I haven't found any bargains for. Often I realise I have to change the crank too because it doesn't match the current Shimano Sora bolts.

So assume I get this and put it on a rear wheel that can fit a 10 speed, I could drop a chainring at the front with the current sora, get a cheap chain tensioner and the chain should stay on eliminating the need for a narrow-wide and I would have the gear ratios that won't find me struggling on ascents and descents?

in theory yes, its getting used to gearing and knowing what you need at the bottom or top, i tend to climb 1500-3000 metres (not feet) a week so i like a 30T on the front with a 42T on the back, you lose top end and can spin out on long stretches of roads downhill, but thats the only downside, far simpler and less clutter, claning,
i can get upto 25-30km before spin out (on a 30T/11T) so the majority of the time thats fine.

narrow/wides are £15 on superstar components, with the £5 discount on hukd, or a chain
