You just need to use software such as PowerDVD Ultra. Make sure you buy the version of this optical drive that comes with an OEM version of PowerDVD Ultra. It only supports stereo audio so if you need surround sound you’ll need the retail version. It costs more unless you have a peg leg and a parrot.

Any idea if this will work with an xbox360?
Just wondered if I could put it in an external USB case and plug into the 360. Seeing as the 360 HD-DVD drive can be used with a pc seems to be logical it might work.
thanks
#12
I dont think so because with the external hd dvd drive you need the software cd that comes with the hd dvd add on,might be worth giving sony a call to see if they can help you out ;-)
#13
No chance at all obviously.....

Well, not really as the 360 has a driver disc with the HDDVD drive and this doesn't. I'm confused though - the 360 HDDVD drive is dirt cheap now, cheaper than this so price is a moot point, and the 360 has no software to play BD discs even with a BD enabled drive attached.

Sorry mate, no free BD lunch here.

i can guarantee that it wont work.

the X360 HD DVD drive needs drivers to be able to work with Windows - same with the XBOX 360 version; the drivers are either on the CD that comes with it or automatically downloaded from LIVE.
#16
this is a good drive, all in one you'll ever need for the pc

unless you want to burn blurays, then you buy the more expensive model

I got a 360 HD-DVD drive for £10 yesterday and it didnt need any drivers to work with WinXP on my EEE 900. It set itself up as a DVD Drive when I plugged it in.

Regarding this deal, I'll wait till the BD burners drop in price. Not bad for a dual format player on PC though

- Too true, a nice insurance for HD DVD owners too (if they haven't - unlikely I know - picked up a spare XBox 360 HD DVD drive or HD DVD player).

Pity Blu-ray burners and blank media is still stunningly expensive.

Where did you get the HD drive for a tenner from?

Cheers
#24
Maybe second hand but you can get them new for £17.99 from Game or £19.99 from Game station (or £24.99 with 2 HD DVD films) whilst stocks last obviously.

Incidentally Ms could make this work exceptionally easily - they could just offer a patch via live or a driver disc. Of course they won’t as it would be supporting a Sony proprietary format. At the end of the day most peripherals that work with a p.c could be made to work with a 360 very easily – if MS want them to....

Judging that dvd burners can be had for around £10 on offer, these will be £30 by Autumn ( they were around £100 a couple of months ago)

But they may not have the HD-DVD piece of the jigsaw, which is important for some of us;-)

I bought the drive from ebuyer for £10 more and it is the business:thumbsup:
#32
It is and its well worth the money. Moving forward you wont have multi format hd drives they are very expensive to make and hd dvd is now defunct unfortunately....

Which is why if you want one you would be smart to buy whilst their is stock.
