In my opinion these are better and i have had mine since the summer , excellent bit of kit.

Also this one runs on main with battery backup.

Thanks for that, didn't know they did cat flaps like this. I've got a magnetic one at the moment but tempted to buy one of these because our neighbours 3 cats also have magnets.

My neighbour's cat doesn't have a magnet that I'm aware of - just a very hard head - so he breaks in whenever he likes and eats all the food, much to the distress of my cats. The manufacturers of my (completely useless) magnet-type catflap tell me that their product has a lifetime guarantee against breakage, but this doesn't guarantee that it'll actually work. As the fat cat hasn't broken it - he just bends it enough to get in - they won't replace it.

I've been looking at a chip based catflap for a while but if it's as useless as the magnet one then it's a lot of money for nothing. Does this one (or the other one you recommended) come with any kind of money-back guarantee if he breaks in again?

I emailed sureflap and got this reply this morning:

"Yes, if your neighbour’s cat does manage to get through Sureflap, we will happily refund or replace.

Kind regards,

Which seems good to me. I can't understand why the cold votes, for a catflap which uses microchips and comes with a guarantee that it'll exclude strays this is very cheap. Staywell flaps (in my experience) don't keep other cats out because they're too flimsy but the guarantee is just a repair or replace if it actually breaks.

If you can find a better price for this or the Pet-Porte (but I emailed them with a similar question months ago and got no response) then let me know, otherwise I'm about to buy one.

I was looking at these last week and whilst its a great idea, it seems the reviews weren't that good. Apparently the mechanism is quite loud and it scares timid cats and they dont use it. Also no good if cats arent chipped.

I have had a Sureflap for about 6 months now and its absolutely fantastic, thoroughly recommended. I went through various magnetic flaps, then the infra-red one, but that kept failing, so I got one of these.

I wouldn't want the one thats mains-powered, who needs a cable trailing around an opening door? The batteries in the flap have last over 6 months so far, so its not like battery life is a major concern.

The flap does make a audible click when opening, but my cat's never seemed bothered by it, I wouldn't let that put you off.

I don't know why people would give this product a bad review, its one of the best things I've bought. Its probably paid for itself by now, as I was replacing the infra-rad collar tags about once a month at £15 each!

I agree - and if they drop their prices to this level I'll have one but at 50% more, I'm not sure it is THAT worth it!!

Hmmm - that is SAD.
You going to feed them over the net too - or can the neighbour who feeds them open the flap if you forget, saving lots for the 'upgrade'
