for those moaning about price .... lets have it right

    i bought a surface pro 3 for 675 (128gb)

a 128gb ipad air on john lewis is £639

so we are talking 36 quid difference, and for that you are getting a full pc, that runs full programs has a usb port, micro sd card port.

This is a completely new form factor. Just because you can buy an i3 laptop for a few hundred doesnt actually mean it will be any good.

Not really. It's a full PC capable of a lot in tablet form. An i3 can handle almost everything most people throw at it. Expensive yes but not awful.

Only google seem to have understand the market, bringing android and a very competitive tablet and phone, a laptop that compete in its own cloud!

If you are genuinely asking the question this or an iPad, then you really don't need this! In fact you probably don't need anything more than your phone.

Well there are poor and rich students. There are also those that are wise enough to save up on booze to get such an invaluable machine like this.
And the tuition fees did not go up. They freaking brought the roof down (300% increase with no reflection to the quality of the studies. What did you expect the students do? Bend over and lower knickers?

I just bought one of these a few weeks ago, imported from the US.

    It is AWESOME!

Forget all this jack of all trades master of none rubbish form people who do not have one, it is master of them (almost) all!

It does not 'fall over', the kickstand doesn't really allow for that to happen, it does work just fine on your lap, aircraft seat back table, desk, sofa, arm of sofa, bed, etc. etc. I've used it in all these places. It is the lightest full pc you can just pick up like a paper pad/notebook and just walk around the office with. Yet I can do software development work on it, actual content creation not just consumption.

You will almost certainly want the keyboard cover for it, but then you probably won't need any other kind of case for it as the cover protects the screen and the back is metal (I am going to put a protective film on though).

My Yoga 2 Pro has been hardly used since I got the SP3, for many people like me it no only can replace your laptop but will, because having just one easy to carry device will quickly make you lose interest in wanting to carry around any of the others as well.

As soon as I can get the dock for it as well, it will replace my desktop too. I'll just move the storage from it to a NAS drive.

If you have any specific questions about how it works in some scenario, please ask!

aren't these the ones with overheating and Random Shut Off Issue?

A quick Google shows that some people have had that issue, along with the Surface Pro 2 and the original Surface Pro. But using Google to search for "[any electronic device] overheating" brings up a lot of results for each product. If this does have an overheating issue, which I haven't heard of until you questioned it, then it does have a warranty. The only thing that the Surface Pro 3 has been criticised for from reviews, that seem consistent across the board, is software issues.

I really want one but the 64gb version only has 36gb free according to the spec and as you can't use all 36gb as Windows needs space on the drive you end up with very little hard drive space. I can't see the point of the 64gb version, if I get one it will need to be 128gb minimum. I also wish it came 4G capable for this price.

The only issue i have is that everything you download has to be done through the windows store which is just naff - especially as the store is quite limited and is dictated by Microsoft software (like your browser can only be internet explorer - you cant have chrome or firefox etc.)If you can get over that then you have a tablet and laptop together...so....overall happy feeling ;-p

Well that is a load of BS.

If that is the case then you have the surface RT not the surface Pro. The surface pro runs full windows 831 and can do everything your full desktop computer can.

Apart from the upgraded SSD and CPU are the other specs the same? I imagine more RAM maybe!
Otherwise £189 for an extra 64GB of storage (cost about £30 at retail) means you are paying ~£160 for the CPU upgrade; about the same price as a new retail desktop Intel i5 quad core.
I think MS are being very optimistic if they think people will pay Apple type price gouging for upgrades.
    Time will tell.

Nice 'niche product', but Microsoft need to make the i5 / 128GB the base model for £575, otherwise this is dead in the water.

64GB (32Gb Usable)/i3 doesn't cut it in 2014 for £600, however nice the form factor.
A 512GB MSata is ~£155, versa £35 for 64GB, max £120. Why do MS keep fcuking up.

Tim Cook is an expert at judging supply/component demand, 80M iPhones preordered, they must be confident.

Save you £600 quid for the next iPhone, by the looks of it. I'll be more useful in 2 years and have a better resale value than the base model Surface Pro 3 (in student budgeting terms)

Your post is so confusing, why do you start off by slating the surface pro 3 and then end by suggesting a phone as a suitable replacement?

soo..575 plus 100 for the keyboard makes near on 700 quid. for that price the laptop i can get will come with a better processor and hard drive. I can also change the battery and hard drive easily on a laptop. I can also sit the laptop on my legs and adjust the screen to stay at any angle and comfortably type. Seems with the keyboard attachment its almost a laptop but not as good. happy not to be in the in crowd and will take my trusty laptop anyday. sorry but voted cold.If MS want to compete they need to stop their ripoff pricing model .Apple wanabe's

This isn't a review site. Can you get a Surface Pro 3 cheaper elsewhere? If not then this is a deal for those wanting one so voting cold is pointless.

Windows 8.1 although a great improvement over Windows 8 is still a nightmare compared to Android. I've got a Note 10.1.Right now I'm looking to reset the device as when it hits suspend mode it just eats the battery - never had a problem with my android devices and to be blunt if you search the web is a common fault across newer Windows mobile/8.1 tablet devices. In terms of the stylus I prefer my Note 10.1 just because the Samsung note application is so much more finger friendly than OneNote. However the MS handwriting recognition is really good.Overall very expensive for what you get and very expensive accessories unlike other tablets - but for a piece of hardware it is amazing and for those who think the kick stand is a gimic think again - it a amazing piece of engineering that actually works. Now if MS can sort the software glitches, the overheating (try underclocking) and make Windows 8.1 metro interface actually work they will be onto a business/student friendly device.Just my 2 cents worth.

Android is hopeless on tablets but the app store is light years ahead of Windows Store. I don't see how this compares Android is extremely limited for office applications, this would thrash it. Where Android excels is in sharing information between apps, it's useless on Windows (using the hidden charms menu is just horrible) but very good on Android. It depends what you want do to. This is not a traditional Android/IOS tablet, it's really a Windows 8.1 tablet/computer. Android/IOS can't do desktop functionality at all like Windows, so I'd get this if you're a desktop user more than a tablet user, so someone who wants a decent portable desktop environment.

Surface Pro 3 is my favourite Surface (I've owned every other model)

It is finally light enough to be used as tablet.

But also the screen is now large enough to not feel cramped.

It is incredible what MS have fitted into a device only 50g heavier then Samsung's 12.2"

Pricing wise, what MS want is very comparable to the rest of the market. If you compare against the Macbook Air it is quite close. (SP3 a little more once you add the keyboard) But the Surface Pro 3 should cost more than the Macbook, Macbook has a terrible screen for its price point.

I don't need an app store. I have Steam.

Ah that's annoying, a surface pro 3 is on the to-buy list... but there are issues. You can't get a long warranty (3-4 years), and if you need to open it to replace the battery or clean the dust out the front glass is so thin it may well break. I can't justify paying that much for a device that has a consciously limited lifespan, an android tablet sure but not a full blown laptop replacement.
