better to get a 16mb 7.2k or 32mb 5.4k?
#3
The 7.2k rpm is going to be faster
#4
even though the 5.4k rpm has 32mb Cache? I'm pretty sure the bus speed cant keep up with 5.4k anyway?
#5
The bus transfers 3GB/s but these hdd are able to transfer at most 1GB/s (well, the 7.2k) I'm sure the 5.4k rpm hard drives are slower. Google a bit and you'll find some good answers to your question.

Price is £62.66 inclusive delivery, cold. Scan/scam "av forum free delivery" never works.
#7
pet2000, it always worked (and works) for me... please read the instructions here

And you have to be logged in both sites so scan can update your account and give you the free delivery.
#8
Scan with free delivery from AVForums has worked for me.
#9
i need more storage but which one is best? im not a big techie so most of the google stuff on these is a bit beyond me, im looking for reliability and speed. I will be using it external as i have no more internal space.

There are benchmarks here:

Hitachi seems faster.

He's not talking crap.
I previously used to get the free delivery, but now I don't (still using the same account, checked previous orders that had free delivery).
It really is hit and miss, so please get the facts before accusing people of 'talking crap'.

EDIT: I've actually just sent them an email asking why I now pay fpr delivery. Response should be interesting.

free delivery worked.

bit of a pain in **** to get it to mind!!

had to register on avf, refresh the avf link to be logged in & have the link from them to scan, register on scan, log in, then close scan window, hit the avf-scan link again, then it tells me i can have free del, got the 7200 / 16mb cache.
#16
I still get free delivery - no problems ever.
Which out these 2 would be best in a Sky HD box?
#17
You don't have to choose.
The non-'green' version is still available, though not on offer at the moment from scan.
1TB Samsung HD103UJ Spinpoint F1, SATA 3Gb/s, 7200rpm, 32MB Cache, 8.9 ms, NCQ

As a reference the basic rules with these two hard drives are that the Samsung is a better storage drive and the Hitatchi is the better system drive. Thinking i'll go for the Sammy myself, the Hitatchi runs hotter and every degree counts in a mITX case. I'll be switching to SSD for the system soon anyhow :)

I just ordered the 1.5tb one from play.....should i cancel the order and go for one of these? and if so, which one?

my experience over the last 2 - 3 years has been one of no issues whatsoever, except for the period when Scan pulled the offer due to abuse by woodentops abusing the £20+ VAT MOQ.

Good link!

However the exact Samsung drive isnt there! With an ARTISTIC licence i read it as the Samsung F2 was much better!

Anyone no of a good deal on a couple of WD Caviar Green 1TB Hard Drive?

Is the Scan £7.03 each more worth it?

Just had to do the same thing. Apparently avforums was changed a while back, but if you didn't visit them you'd never have known about it.

I now get free del again, yay.

So much for getting the facts straight then - well done :whistling:
He said it "never works" - it patently does - and all you had to do was pull your finger out to sort it out. Amazes me how people will moan about offers not working but can't be bothered to check with the company in question (or forum) as to why.

Shame you can't combine avforums and hexus forums offers and get a discount :-D
#24
thanks! ordered the hitachi, had to reactivate the avforums discount too, very simple. I'd already logged into scan as had the discount before, didn't appear, so logged into avf, googled avf for the discount link and clicked it, and sorted!

Got an 'order delayed' email on the Hitachi external ....gutted.

All things being equal Hitachi probably aren't the best choice for reliability.

Spring the xtra for the WD Caviars.

Try formatting it in Disk Management.

cheers, managed to work that out about 5 mins after my last post!!

long time since I've added a 2nd drive, back then it was slap it in, set a switch to 'slave' , and I'm sure it appeared in the list as unformatted & you formatted from there, could be wrong, but I don't recall having to access everything in bits via umpteen different menu's!! progress eh!

ps, it's on 22% formatted at the moment, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
