The SwiftKey keyboard for Android has come out of Beta and official version is available on the Android Market for 60p but only until 30th September 2010 then the price goes to it's normal £2.50.

I've used the Beta version for a few months and generally found it pretty good (better imho than the default keyboard). A number of people say that SWYPE is better and faster - I've not used that so can't comment and it's not available for users to download so it's not really an option.

The main selling point of the SwiftKey keyboard is that it supposedly scans your existing SMSs to determine your writing style and then suggests words it believes you are going to type based on context. It took a bit of time to get used to it but once you do it works well; when I briefly went back to a default keyboard I found I missed it a lot!

Hopefully useful to some of you new Android owning folks.

Been using this all through the beta stages.Excellent keyboard, best I've used on Android!
#2
Is this better than the HTC sense keyboard?
#3
I bought it this morning, been using it for weeks.

It writes most of my messages now, I hardly have to think.. lol
#4
I've an HTC Hero so originally had the Sense keyboard - I prefer SwiftKey.

As an aside in Android it's really easy to swap between keyboards once their installed. Simply hold down your finger on the text input box until a pop up selector appears and choose your keyboard of choice (you might have to select Input Method). So it's not as if there's no going back.

And if you search the Android market for "SwiftKey" you should as of today still be able to find the free Beta version if you want to try it out for a few days but remember to buy the full version before the promo period ends otherwise you'll end up back with the default Sense keyboard again!

I've been using Swiftkey beta for ages, and love it.
The usage stats say it's made me 27% more efficient, and sometimes your messages virtually write themselves. I've just upgraded.
#6
i'm also using Swiftkey and it's great although recently the dictionary has been switched off with no autopredict - is this because I need to upgrade? Gonna buy though, its by far the best keyboard.

EDIT its working fine now after upgrade to the paid app, and I love the new gestures.

Agree its a top app
#9
Thanks, just bought this for the wife and me.

I use quite a good dialing app called Fast Call that some might be interested in. Its easier than the standard htc desire one and its free.

I got Swiftkey (free version) last night and I'm impressed, its an improvement on the HTC Sense keyboard. What does the fully paid version give me that I don't have?
#11
haven't used this - however can recommend Swype

Well at some point soon the free version will simply stop working as it's advertised as a BETA so they normally bake in a date on which the software disables itself. Also I *think* based on other peoples comments the beta version no longer includes the dictionary of predictive text words that appear along the top of the keyboard... beyond that not sure. The keyboard layout is slightly different from my Beta version as well.

I had the beta and upgraded yesterday. 60p is an absolute bargain for this superb application. Some might say that Android ought to come with a better inbuilt keyboard programme. Well, it doesn't. This is the app it ought to have had, and for 60p it's a steal. Heat added.

Kopparberger is right - the beta will stop predicting words, which is the best feature of this app.
#14
Anyone know if this will ever come out on iphone 4?
#15
Have installed the beta, will give it a go. It's a bit weird!
#16
Used it throughout the beta. Upgraded last night, do find the predictions are slow. Switched back to stock android keyboard and was shocked at how slow swiftkey was on my Samsung Galaxy Portal i5700. Hoping for an update of some kind...
#17
have been using the beta for a few days, just installed the 60p version - happy enough with it. worth trying to just let the predictor do a whole sentence or text, just pick a word and then let it start predicting the next one - quite fun really.
#18
Just get swype, nothing else comes close.
#19
swype isn't available for all handsets, the creators are just allowing it for specific phones rather than as a market place app.

basically if you didn't get it while in beta phase you can't have it.
#20
Got Swype on the Galaxy S - but Swiftkey at this price is hot :)
#21
Just bought it, and after first text I was 25% more efficient lol woop :) bargain price if its gonna save me plenty of time!
#22
Just bought it too, thats the first android app I have bought..seeing that most of the HUKD community thinks that it is g8, I should be a happy customer at this price...

In some cases SwiftKey can be a lot better, one handed for instance seems quicker most of the time.

Whilst unreleased and unsupported on many phones due to Swypes insistence on trying to sell to manufacturers, Swype is quite easy to obtain for any android phone. They really should put it on the market, would sell so well.
#24
I have noticed that its not as good at guessing the correct word if you hit a few wrong keys. The stocks HTC was excellent at that. Even with my big fingers and tiny keyboard the stock HTC got it right.

I've just bought this as my Swype on the HTC Desire was obviously a Beta and it expired.

Did you know Swype holds the world record for fastest text? One handed it's fine.

A small article and video in link below and mention of it being 60p for a limited time, See how it works >

As far as I know there's >

SlideIT , Swype , Shapewriter and Swiftkey. I'd probably test them all out first, but for 60p you can't go wrong really.

I manage ok with Swype using one hand too! By the way, the Swype beta's continuous, so if yours expired just re-download it from the swype website and it'll run for some more time. I had to download again a couple of weeks ago. Still the best imo, but heat added here for the price here.

Different.

The joys on SwiftKey you'd only have to practice the test paragraph once and the 2nd time you'd complete it in probably < 5 seconds

Great alternative to Swype, just bought swiftkey from the market. Swype takes some practise to get accurate though so will give this a go.
#33
How do I get this to work?

I go to Settings > Language & Keyboard > Make SwiftKey Beta ticked.

When I go to anything say text messages, the default keyboard still comes up.

Wont buy it for real till I can at least get this working.
#34
Got the keyboard working :)
#35
bought swift key last week, getting frustrated with Swype, terribly in-accurate, spend more time correcting words it put down wrong than actually writing the message. Swype is fun, but horribly unusable, swiftkey looks much better though, get it while it is cheap!
#36
Thanks, bought and voted hot!
