On the basis that this is a government initiative that is being funded by the DCMS I think it flies in the face what it is all about for them to charge you £2.00 to register.

That, in theory (and practice) is not free and is wrong !! I don't think the DCMS would be too impressed if they found out either !

At least you're getting it!
I've heard that Blyth Valley are pocketing the money from the Govt for this and not giving us the swimming free at all!

No, they can't do that - they only get the money if they definitely agree to offer the initiative. It's impossible to do otherwise

some councils are managing to get away with being very strict over who gets free swimming. I've heard its £2 for a card in a few areas

A councillor who uses the pool has told people that the ok has not been given yet and they can use the money as they wish.

They wouldn't be able to do that as the funding is strictly monitored by the DCMS and you have to report back on things like usage.

The only way you could divert the money elsewhere is if you are already offering free swimming to the 60+ and 16 and unders, but even then it would still have to go to some form of free swimming, eg, free lessons, free swimming for other age groups, etc.

Today, I was told by the receptionist that the free swimming is on.
We shall just have to wait and see.
Knowing Blyth Valley as I do, I'm not holding my breath.
Unless I'm swimming, of course.
