better off paying the extra for the 2 bay version £149.99...not checked elsewhere, sure novatech will be cheaper

Novatech are £120 for 1 bay and £160 for 2 bay. This is a very good price for someone not requiring a 2 bay set up.

This is a good price.

I was looking for one of these a few months ago and never saw it less than about £115.

Of course this is just the enclousure and needs a disk adding.

I saw a review of NAS devices a while ago and this got very good reviews, although I gather the user interface can be rather overwhelming with all the options available.

Synology make cracking bits of kit, can't recommend them highly enough.

The software's much easier to get your head round since they released V3, not that it was ever particularly difficult bearing in mind everything it can do.

Dabs have this at the same price + quidco.

Still a decent price if you prefer to order from Amazon.

Nor is it HotQuidcoOnlyDeals, the selling price is no cheaper at any other retailer so this certainly doesn't deserve to be cold.

That's fair enough :) I haven't voted either way on this, but as already pointed out it's the same price at least one other retailer (without even taking into account Quidco).

It's just my opinion, but I don't believe a deal is hot just because someone doesn't like shopping at the alternatives.

A quick search in Google shows the price is now below £115 at quite a few places.

Certainly when I was looking for one of these about 3 months ago I could not see it anywhere under £115, now it is fairly easy to buy under that price.

Maybe Synology have knocked £10 or so off the RRP.

Lets face it, NAS devices are dropping in price all the time.

Review of it here

I voted hot, not because I thought it was a hot price, but because I felt -20 wasn't justified.

I tend not to consider cashback sites like Quidco in voting because HUKD doesn't allowed them to be counted in deal prices...

It's the same so not exactly hot either!

I'm voting cold as I want this site to revert back to the days when posts were good deals, one time offers, get it while you can sort of thing.
not.. a site to re-publish the current market rate of items.

n.b The ability to get cash back via quido also presents an advantage of buying through Dabs instead of Amazon.

Personally if you plan to use it to store data then I'd pay the extra and get the 2 Bay version and either use Raid1 or set it to backup from one disk to the other periodically.

With these 1TB + drives you get thesedays it's a LOT of data to lose if one of the drives go kaput.

If it's just being used to backup data that is already stored elsewhere or it's stuff you don't mind losing then the single bay one would be ok.

Also synology NAS's format the drives to EXT3/EXT4 mostly which means if the NAS dies you should still be able to get back the data by connecting the drive to a pc running linux.

You can add drives Via USB, but they show up as USBshare1 USBshare2.etc and you cannot control permissions on a per folder basis like you can with the internal drive.
