Synology DS1512+ for £639.98 @ Novatech bargain I think

dregnetdregnet

I've been looking at buying myself a new 5bay NAS box and here is the cheapest that I can find on the internet.
Brilliant little thing. I've already got a 2bay version but I've maxed it out.

Get yerself a HP Microserver :)

Probably be able to max it out with 5x 2TB drives and a SSD for less than this

N40L for £130 has 4bays, you can just run one bay externally via external sata port and boom, £500 saved

small bios mod to enable the extra internal SATA to full speed ;)

    HP server £140 after cashback
    5x 2tb disk - £75
    Windows 7 - £80
    total = £595

And that price is assuming you need windows, if your just after NAS functions then it would be a little over £500 for all the drives you need and to run a flavour of linux or raid software as the HP supports raid 1, 0 and JBOD.

N40L for £130 has 4bays, you can just run one bay externally via external sata port and boom, £500 saved

OR 4 in the standard bays, 1 external via SATA, up to 6 via USB 2.0 ports and then however many you can cram in the top of the 5 1/4 bay, I've seen a good set up with 4 and a few less likeable ones with even more (albeit 2.5inch disks).

Plus if you plan to buy a lot of drives there are a few places you could possibly get a discount for bulk purchase.

Also, I've never understood this fixation with NAS systems with odd numbers of disks as surely the most common RAID uses generally are those where even numbers of disks are employed.

Have you forgotten to add VAT to your prices? The N40L from Misco is £140 ex VAT and the £75 you hope to get 2TB's for looks ex-VAT, too.
It's still a lot cheaper than the NAS box which is basically just a chassis, power supply and SATA bus - with no disks oO

My DiskStation is great. Does everything I could want and a lot more besides. Requires zero maintenance. Just a decent reliable system.

However, mine was the 4-disk version and cost nothing like this much. I would not get this for a home use. I think you're paying a massive premium for the scalability. As a basic data storage for a SME I'd say it's a decent price. Great for backing up many servers with a lot of data, but for home my DS411J was a better option IMO.

Oh, and cold from me as it looks like this isn't even a particular deal. Just do a search and you'll find that hte deal posted is about average for this model.

Thought it was a microwave and was curious why it would cost over £600.

N40L microserver is available from Amazon for £239 and qualifies for £110 cashback so is effectively only £129 (and I've checked that purchase from Amazon itself, not marketplace are ok for cashback). Just bought one and installed Ubuntu server so no need to pay for an OS. As for 2TB disks then they are definitely available for £80.

Errr hard disks being this price ex vat is definitely wrong as I got 2tb for my HP a few weeks ago for £75 delivered so that is where I get my price from

    http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/2tb-seagate-barracuda-st2000dl003-hard-disk-drive-5900rpm-71-39-delivered-ivoryegg-1249057

Under £75 delivered is the going 'good' price for a 2tb storage drive and my figures were purely approximates anyway to start with. As for the HP a host of retailers offer it for £140 after cashback including vat. Any deal hunter worth his salt would keep track of prices for items of interest such as this to know when to buy the things they are looking for. Yes I could have posted links, but most people can and should be searching first.
