Its reduced from £373 down to £188 in the Amazon Lightening Deals, which is a bargain for a machine which can transcode 4k on the fly and operate as a full web and media server.

Apparently their were issues with the processor supply, which this means model is EOL
So is that just a way of saying this model doesn't work properly?

As far as I can tell a new version of the chip were released, and Intel discontinued it. So now they ship the upgrade/replacement.

The 716+ were a top seller, certainly no problems I have read about.

Worth getting on the wait list if you want one. Given the speed the percentage bar were moving, I'd expect some wait list spaces (unless it says sold out, I can't see since I bought one already).

Generally that'd mean "we can't get enough of these chips" "oh stuff it, let's use a different chip and stop making the original model". Not actual issues with the processor, just the supply of them being inadequate for whatever reason.

I've been wanting to get a synology for a while but now that I have ms office with tb of data, I'm not sure how useful this will be. What else can you do with it?

If I wanted to login to my pc/Mac at home, would this allow me to do it in a secure gateway way?

Anything else?

it works as a full webserver, media server, back up Inc time machine, vpn, downloader, music streamer, does loads with a nice os to make it neat and easy.

The vpn could be useful to watch local tv while abroad, the rest is interesting but there are less manual ways to do them imo. Though an email server would be cool and maybe a today info display. I need to look into a way to see if this can download/cache any stream, like YouTube videos etc. That would be useful. Will give it a whirl. The os is the best thing about it, love how well it's laid out.

Recommend a specific brand hard drive?

I'm all about HGST drives, the only drives i have recommended in recent years have been the Samsung F4's and Hitachi Deskstars. I did worry that WD would turn them to trash but it seems WD have taken the best of Hitachi and integrated it into their Red Drives rather then putting their WD stuff into HGST.

I have 3 (now 4) synology units and never had a.single drive failure with hitachi/hgst. I hear good things post-hgst about WD Red too, but no hands on experience.

the hgst 4tb models routinely go for 125-127 ish on scan.co.uk's Today Only offer page. Just keep an eye out.

the only brand I urge you and anyone else to avoid is seagate, I had 100% failure rate over 12 drives Inc RMA's in less than 3 yrs. Seems my.experience isn't usually.
