Voted cold although a good deal this is, this phones are somewhere in a region of £15 to £20 to unlock, this is why I voted cold.

To `gr8dlz` that is a much better deal

@gr8dlz Is this dualsim? This alcatel

What a godawful phone. you would be better off getting a Huawei Y300 or saving up a bit and getting a Moto G.

Voted hot because not everyone will want it unlocked

Change the title, your overall cost is not £49.99, its £59.99 (including the mandatory argos £10 top-up)

There you go - you can choose your network, but by ask accounts the phone will be unlocked anyway:

That seems much better then the E: larger AMOLED screen, 5mp camera with flash vs. 3mp with no flash, plus already SIM free, so in effect the same price.

Just as a word of caution, this deal is for the Xperia E, which was released over a year ago, not the E1 which is more recent with some (but not all) improved specs.

512MB RAM, only 4GB internal memory (2GB available) on an Android phone (microSD slot won't help for many apps which can only be installed on phone memory), 3.2 MP camera - Pretty crappy specs these days tbh even for £49.99 and certainly not future-proofed, cold from me.

For an older person that's not bothered about the latest and greatest specs it's a decent phone, my mother has one and she doesn't care what camera it has, she never uses it. She doesn't have many apps on there either. So for a Sony phone which tend to have great build quality, this is a decent price, just not aimed for those that like the best on the market.

I can understand that, but for a few quid more you could get something like the Moto E which will hold up for far longer. It just seems like false economy to me, spending less but having to fork out sooner for a replacement.

Super cold. Terrible screen, old and insecure Android version with no hope of an update, tiny memory...

And for the same price you can actually get a decent phone.

All these phone arguments is making my head hurt. I need a phone for my daughter that will work on the 3 network that is cheap enough for me not to commit murder if lost....again. Please help anyone

The Alcatel linked to in the first post seems a good deal if you want this price - the screen should be much nicer and it's dual core, so speedier, although still limited by 512mb RAM - depends on her needs, though.

A few months ago Vodafone were calling me a couple of times a week, desperate to renew my entry-level contract with one of these phones (Xperia E). On two separate occasions when I asked what other phones were available, they said they were having computer problems and would call me back - they never did!

Really is an appalling phone - I am saddled with one for work and would never inflict them on my worst enemy - laggy beyond belief, and practically no space for extras apps or even updates. At least as bad as the Galaxy Ace, if not worse...

fwiw, Tesco Direct offering the ZTE Blade Q mini on Virgin Mobile for £56 click & collect again. If you can find a £10 discount code for new customers spending £50, it will bring the price down to £46.

ZTE can be unlocked for less than £3.99, using code off eBay.

The ZTE is missing a front camera just like the Xperia E, but the ZTE does have a 4" screen, faster processor, and 1GB ram. You can find an unboxing video on youtube.

I'm not sure I recommend it (think the extra value stretching to £70 for a Moto E would be well worth the slight extra cost and won't have them coming to you moaning about how awful the phone is, unless the camera is important to them), but this Samsung Fame is about the price you're looking at and does at least have some app storage space (loads compared to the Xperia E!).

Reviews often say it is quite laggy though, though not sure it could be as bad as the E (might be wrong though!) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Galaxy-Fame-White-Airtime/dp/B00CHNSI9S/ref=sr_1_27?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1404404192&sr=1-27&keywords=android+mobile

Ugh I think I just recommended a Samsung...feel a little nauseous!

For just slightly more than the Xperia E, there's this Huawei Y330 which gives you dual core and a 4" screen - I hazard a guess from my old G300 there's a lot more app space too:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Huawei-Ascend-Smartphone-Genuine-Stock/dp/B00JKCB3MI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1404993133&sr=8-1&keywords=y330

...anyone noticed it's really hard to find out what available app space there really is on phones, and the onboard storage quoted is NOT the whole picture - for the Xperia E which is "4GB" for example it appears to be less than 739MB due to partitioning of onboard memory which is not mentioned in the spec (leaving 2GB free onboard that can't be used for apps/updates). Why they do this except to cripple the phone is beyond me...
