All I will say is they are generally regarded as the worst broadband provider in the civilised world, they put their own hardware in the local exchanges, and it is poorly maintained, and expect to get throttled to a dial up speed in the evenings.

if you are only a email checker, then it may be ok, but if you actually use the internet, steer well clear.

dont say you were not warned

I take it then that you have used talktalk. I am over 5 km from my exchange... BT broadband got me 1.2 meg, with TalkTalk I am getting over 3 meg and still the same speed in the evening. As for throttling, can you substantiate this or are you just spouting against talktalk on old hearsay ?

Obviously I can not reel out reems of proof, I spent a morning with a BT engineer, and we were discussing broadband.

he told me about the exchanges, as for the other stuff if you go to ispreview web site you will find reems of pages of complaints about them.

of course they will have the happy customers, and I am pleased they got you that speed, I presume you have speed checked it, not took for granted what it says on your desktop?

i have been with talktalk over 2 years now and was told i would get the free broadband within 6 months, which came and went. we got in touch and they said we wouldnt get it due to bt owning the phone lines or something like that. in my opinion they should not have told us we would get it free if we werent going to. i would change provider but to be honest i cant be bothered with the hassle

And thats my experience as well!

I'd use smoke signals before I went back to BT

:-D

I changed to Talktalk from Orange, which as a company completely suck, they were so bad I refused to pay my bill which was then cancelled by their head Office.
Since joining Talktalk, the customer service has been great, even from India ! They call back when they say they will, they replaced my router when I experienced problems, without any hassle. They have even called me days later to check my call to them had been dealt with to my satisfaction!!
The speed is great, and yes I have checked this numerous times, I even connected my parents up with them and they have had the same experience that I have had.

I believe at first they did have problems, mainly because of the take up on their free broadband but my dealings with them have been smooth and silky.

talktalk do it for me ,they have saved me a small fortune in telephone costs. The free broadband is not free , They have just upgraded the local exchange and have increased from £10 to £12.99 a month(quicker speed so they say). I was thinking of switching to sky , the £26 package looks good, but i'm sure there must be a catch in there somewhere.

I agree with you 100%
Particularly about the throttling bit, all torrent sites are throttled.

Customer service is in South Africa. Not India but agree about poor service.

re the throttling, basicallyt nearly all isp's throttle, TalkTalk use DPI, which inspects the packets being sent and received, this is then throttled if found to be p2p transmissions and there is a lot of traffic on the exchange. This I am quite happy with as it means that my browsing is not slowed to a crawl by torrent users stealing movies, music, software etc

So you gleaned all this information from a BT engineer...lol The equipment is maintained in the exchanges by BT as they only allow their own engineers in to the exchange :w00t: so your engineer friend admits that BT poorly maintain their exchanges. That is hilarious, even the fact that you admit that your sum total of knowledge came from an engineer..
Perhaps you should check FACTS before making yourself look dim.

As for speedtests, Where exactly on my desktop would I find my internet speed. I like everyone else check it online, in my case cross referenced against 5 different checkers.

As for speeds in evenings being throttled, TT do not throttle internet traffic, only p2p traffic as I have already described above (using DPI and only when traffic in the exchange is heavy)

Some people are amazing, what isp are you with then

I dont really know why you are being aggresive, I was only trying to point out there are a lot of people who do "still" regard talk talk to be a terrible ISP, actually your point about BT engineers only in their own exchange is right, and that is why it is poorly maintained, as they dont touch it, it is talk talks equipment, if it goes faulty they log a call and have to wait for a BT engineer to fix it, it gets no maintenence, so dont call me dim, for pointing out a valid point.

also ask yourself 1 easy question. why do they need to put you on a contract, if their BB is so good why tie you down to at least a year?

if you go to any review site of BB, they will say "Never" join a ISP that insists on a contract, it is rule1. what you going to do if your BB gets rubbish?

I use a comapny called TItan ADSL, which are voted very highly in all ISP reviews, but it is £15 for just broadband, so I pay for that privelige.

you get it free if they have their equipment in the exchange, if they dont and they have to piggyback BT's gear, you have to pay

Reason for post is people running down isp's without having experience of them and hearsay information.
What isp's apart obviously from titan do not have a contract?

and titan dont even supply their own bb just a reseller, so you are an entanet customer, I'm sure I can find lots of unhappy enta customers, but I don't go around slagging off others isp's

You say it in your own words “basically nearly all isp's throttle” so why not go with the ones that do not.

I used to be with voda (isp) and my telephone line was with voda as well.
When I had a problem with my line.
I had a voda engineer come to my house, he was in full voda uniform.
On examination he said he would have to go to the exchange (not the street cabinet) and look at the equipment there, he then phoned me on my mobile to say there is a fault at the exchange and he will replace the faulty equipment and it will take in 10 mins.
No mention of bt engineer

Ive been with tt for 3 years in Liverpool now and in general have not had to many problems about once twice a year internet goes down but usually backup next day! the only downside i have had is if trying to get thru to cs, but its like most companys cs centres most are abroad and its sometimes hard to understand them! just recently upgarded to tt wireless which was a bit of chore to get tt to help but is a ok now:thumbsup:
I understand what your saying about tt installing own hardware @ xchange and i believe if u decided to change isp there is an additional charge to remove tt hardware, how much that would be i donot know.
we saved hundereds of £££ especialy now my bother lives in canada as long as we enter the correct tt prefix and call back after 69 mins we donot get charged and we always talk to them via windows live messenger usually with cam, have had no probs! also downloading, streaming music/video all good
