Tamron sounds like a band from Motown.

A touch cheaper at Amazon at £65.66 delivered:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tamron-55-200mm-F4-5-6-Macro-Canon/dp/B000BONMLY

This lens has a reasonable reputation as a cheap alternative with a good step up in quality from the included basic lens Canon give with the 400d.

Pretty comprehensive review here. Definitely worth a read if you are considering this lens:

200mm (35mm equ. = 300mm) really needs IS (or VR if you are Nikon)

Inside, yes, but a good lens for, say, the zoo on a sunny day. Good value @ £70, although Sigma do a better lens for £150

Sure, you've saved up for a decent Canon camera and now you're about to shove a £70 lens on it. You want monkeys then by all means pay in peanuts.!

Sigma 70-300mm APO is £150-ish and a great lens for the price.

You want something a lot wider though. Generally speaking, Sigma lenses are good value across their range. You might be best off with their 18-50mm lens plus something longer like the 70-300 to (virtually) complete the range.

Plus get a 50mm prime f/1.8 lens, Canon's is like £60 or something silly.

i have the tamron 28-75mm f2.8 and have to say it`s brilliant so sharp, not tried this one but don`t be put of by the brand.

I have the Canon 50mm f1.8 It's sweet....as long as you want to shoot 50mm!
