Just been flicking through januarys issue of Hi-Fi Choice.

Richer Sounds sale page includes the previously mentioned Tannoy F4's At a craxy price of £119.99 - RRP was £400.

These are great speakers....and coupled with the matching centre speaker at £49.99....they make for a very cheap Hi-Quality system.....I'll be having 2 sets, front AND rear.

Also worth noting that the 5 year replacement program is still 10% - and is refundable after the 5 years if you dont claim.....

Im aware they are still showing £149.99 online......which WAS cheap...but i assure you, if you mention hi-fi choice in-store.....you'll get them at the lower price of £119.99

Any idea what these would be like connected to a 5.1 surround sound amp etc

If it's a decent amp then they would sound fantastic. I'm tempted to get 2 pairs for my Onkyo TX-SR875.

I tried my floorstanding speakers out connected to one and they still sounded great... upgraded to a proper av amp and it was 100x better!!!
#4
Cheers for that - I was looking at the Sony STR-DG820 from Play - 2 pairs of these , the centre speaker and then just have to find a Sub

I bought a pair a fortnight ago when they were £150. With my Sony STR-DB930 they sounded far, far better than my previous bookshelf speakers. They're now being driven by an Onkyo TX-SR606 and sound absolutely terrific. Fantastic bargain IMHO.

then just have to find a Sub
Don't rush into that, I have owned a Kef sub and a set of Kef floor standers it made all the movies and TV's I watched obnoxiously bassy. I felt guilty about it late at night.

I have an HK AV amp that comes with a little mic and can automatically set up the amplitude, delay, phase and frequency of all the speakers for your seating position.

Yet when I watched a movie at a sociable level and there was the obligatory bus crash or explosion, the bus was so stupidly loud I had to leap for the volume-down key in embarrassment.

I think 5.1 is designed for sub-sat setups, some quality floor standers give you all the bass you need, and it's much better integrated into the movie.

I have the stg-dr820...

And currently 1 set of f4's ( get my 2nd pair on friday )

My tannoy subwoofer is DIS-CONNECTED.....Not required most of the time.

For those of you who bought from richer sounds at £150.

if you bought on the 7th DEC or after - take your receipt in and ask for the £30 back. They should give it to you with no problems.

Thanks for pointing that out there.....

If people take the time to read the op's post....then they might get the details ....too many people just look at the product name, picture, and price......

Its 119.99. and WILL NOT get any cheaper after the year is out.

I'm with you.

For average sized rooms, pairing already bass strong floorstanders with a sub can be a bit OTT. Ask if you can listen to them before you buy. Set the amp to send the .1 bass channel to them, and they might end up providing enough bass for your personal taste or need, and a sub might then be unneccesary.

Having said that, while I'd love a pair of these for stereo music sans sub, I wouldn't use them for 5.1. I'd go with a smaller speaker, like the Tannoy Custom F1, and pair it with a decent sub to handle the bass. A decent sub will have much better, tighter bass and response than floorstanders for movie soundtracks.

But for less than £120 a pair, this is a great deal. I wish I had the space.

if anyone missed these i have a remarkable set of celestion 3 way floorstanding... amazing sound. no room in new flat... pick up scotland area... only lookiong for £50
#19
I picked up 2 sets of these up today and ive gotta go back for the centre speaker on saturday. I have mixed feelings over my experience with richersounds though. I had the distinct feeling they lied to me over the missing speaker. The computer said yes, the staff said no, and then they pulled the we had two phone calls at the same time trick.... mmm yeah right, it took them 30 minutes to come up with that one. Plus the fact ive also got one speaker spike missing (not their fault I know), but at the moment ive got one of my speakers sat on a towel lol.

For anyone wondering though, they are very good speakers and sound really impressive, there are VERY loud. If you live in typical british home, the speakers will fill your room (soundwise) with ease. You certainly get loads of power for your money. And if you want to annoy your neighbours, as I do (shes does it to me at all hours, so PAYBACK TIME! BIATCH HAHA) it will no doubt achieve this. The 'quality' finish of the apple laminate isnt as high as I would of expected though. If I had of paid anywhere close to the RRP (£300+ per pair) I would of took them back as I would of wanted a perfect set for that money. There are a few blemishes that I noticed, like where the laminate has a small crease but trust me I am being very very fussy in saying this.

Richsounds did tell me that they had loads of these in the warehouse, so dont be put off buying thinking they wont be in stock. I wouldnt wait forever though as overall they are a very good bargain.

good stuff apduk.....glad you like them.

the finish on mine is superb.....not a mark on them.........

And, if you think they are loud now.......just wait untill they loosen up......i presume you removed the port plugs.

It says so in the magazine advert. :-D

Just wanted to thank the k13 wjd. I drove to Richer Sounds armed with a mag as proof (on the phone they said they didn't have a copy of their latest advert!) and left with four speakers and a centre. Fantastic deal considering other places are unashamedly trying to sell the same speakers for £290 a pair and almost a £100 for the centre speaker.

I doubt they will have any left after Xmas at this price!

Just thought I'd let you know that if you cant get to a Richer sounds store or cant collect for whatever reason, drop them an email and see if they will manually adjust the price if you buy online. I did, and they were happy to. Now have the floor speakers and centre winging their way to me for an extra £12 delivery which Im happy with seeing as my closest RS store is 50 miles away. £232 total including the 5 year/10% guarentee (for those who dont know you get this refunded if you dont claim on it)
Very happy, just need a new amp now :whistling:

how its only at 63 degrees i dont know....should be bloody thermonuclear by now.......But, as long as someone, somewhere gets great speakers for a silly price....im happy !

I am using a similar Sony STR -DA1200ES Receiver and the 2 pairs I bought sound fantastic with the Tannoy centre compared to the old ones which were originally from a decent/expensive DAVS Sony Surround Sound Setup in a box. Its hooked up with a 46" Sony LCD TV, Sony 870 DVD/HDD recorder and XBox 360 Elite.

I went to an AV shop in Camberley Surrey a while back to enquire about some better speakers but left believing that it would cost about 2K to upgrade, so I abandoned the idea.

My active sub is still a Sony but I can live with that.

Xmas came early for me and I am extremely grateful for the link. I am the one idiot that left the foam in the ports :w00t: They looked like they were meant to be there:oops:

I joined so I could post a thank you, but however much I hover over the temp thing I can't seem to "vote" to raise the temp.

I have also hooked up my Teac HiFi to the second binding posts on the front two (bridges still in place) and put the Teac speakers with Atacama stands in the loft.. I am assuming its OK if I only have one source at a time.
#28
biker.

Firstly, you CAN leave the foam in....it depends on the size of the room !

Secondly...i would advise AGAINST what you have mentioned....a much better idea is to get the teac HI-FI hooked up to the sony amp in some way.

Backwards feeding an AV amp could have nasty results....

As for the sub.....ive dis-connected my tannoy sub...these speakers are fine without it, in my room !
#29
So is it worth bi-amping these speakers?

(I've just noticed that the Denon AV unit I've got will bi-amp the speakers if I disable the "Zone 2" output and assign it to the front speakers)

Point taken, I had doubts anyway so the H-Fi speakers have been reinstated.

Yes...If your amp TRULY does Bi-Amp...then go for it.

Reason i say truly is because many people get mixed up...Some amps allow 2 sets of front speakers to be wired....I.e Front output A & B.....This is NOT bi-amping.....its simply another connection to the front channel....using it will have Very little advantage ( only one being if you have cheap cable....)

SO, do double check..my sony has front a & b out....and its clear that the B output is not up to much...the connectors are cheap and nasty for a start.
Secondly.....Your speakers are a BIT close together really...although having said that.....with the t.v in the corner....i understand....i have the same problem at the moment !....are yours on spikes ?

and lastly...GET THOSE COVERS OFF !!!!!
#33
Bi amped the front two using the two spare rear 7.1 rear channels.

I'd buy a blu-ray player tomorrow if someone produced a silver one, I know Denon do one, but at a premium price.

Sorry double post
#35
all due respect....

But how does that work.....bi-amping the front speakers, with the rear channels.......

The 2 channels have completely different outpts......or are you indicating your amp can duplicate the front channels, by amping them through the 7.1 channels......If so...COOL:-D

Same applies....get those covers off.

Im getting static from the mrs for having 4 of them in the room.....

As I only have two rear speakers I can change the settings in the Sony STR-DA1200ES 7.1 Receiver menu to BiAmp the fronts with those 2 unused channels. The Receiver then outputs identical front info via those unused rear channels.

I have had the Receiver for about 18 months and its more than I need. It would be nice if it could extract sound via the HDMI passthru but thats easily solved with so many inputs.

I don't have a Mrs but the girlfriend moaned that I already had working speakers so it was a complete waste of money replacing them. She doesn't like my Yamaha R1 motorcycle either! but we get along.

I am no audiophile but the difference with these speakers is amazing. There is so much more prescence and increased detail that was previously inaudible. All this with the covers still on! I can't quite get used to the 6 cover locating holes visible when the covers are off. :?

PS I have changed the earlier picture for a better one!
