Excellent speaker, last time they reduced this it was £40 so now it ia an absolute baragin at £29.95 tomorrow only.....

For a better class of centre speaker at a competition-busting price, check out the Tannoy Mercury FC Custom.

With its dense wood construction and MDF baffle this Tannoy centre speaker is far more solid than most. The drive units are of high quality and have been designed to give an accurate mid-range - exactly what you need in a centre speaker.

Yet it's what you can't see that makes the Mercury FC Custom such a well engineered speaker. The upgraded crossover components feature polypropylene capacitors and silver-plated Van den Hul speaker cable for low energy loss and superb detail.

Although designed to match the other Tannoy Custom speakers, the Mercury FC works well in variety of home cinema systems and is the perfect upgrade from a basic centre speaker.

At this price the Tannoy Mercury FC Custom is quite simply a centre of excellence!

surely 5 of these would be no good, as the centre doesnt cover all the freq that the front L&R and Rear L&R require... granted would be a decent centre though
#3
But I'm not a fan of Mercury FC though.
#4
Do what I did, buy the centre speaker plus four Tannoy F4's and a subwoofer.

Those were the days, four Tannoy F4 floorstanders and a FC centre for £290.

The Tannoy FC would put a lot of satellite speakers to shame as the specs say it goes as low as 68hz.
#6
How does this compare to the MC?
#7
Thats pukka, Heat!

v good deal for a reasonable quality centre speaker - reckon most people will struggle to beat this on price
suspended#9
if only they had them in black, may have picked one up then! I dont suppose anyone knows how they compare to the cambridge audio S50 centre?
I currently have a pair of cambridge S30's so ideally id like to match them but i am looking to get some nice floorstanders in the future and use them for rears (the s30s)

Tannoy speakers are usually very nice for the price/spec, these are a steal.

The Tannoy FC is an apple wood finish (not real veneer) so realistically unless you get some Tannoy F4 floorstanders also in apple you are unlikely to get a match with other speakers or brands.

The Tannoy FC is discounted presumably because the whole Tannoy F Custom series is now discontinued and was replaced by a new range of Tannoy speakers some time ago.

Great deal. If anyone knows where I can get a Mordaunt Short Mezzo 5 centre for around £200, let me know

I read somewhere recently that as long as your amp output is a lower ohm than your speaker max ohm rating, you can use any speaker over 6ohms in your case but not lower. Please correct me if I'm wrong as I don't want to give the wrong advice.
#19
Hmm... My amp supports 6 and 8 ohms and currently set to 6 ohms not sure I can just add 8 ohm in to 6 ohm setup ! Any ideas?

Unlikely to be a big problem. Resistance of speakers varies according to frequency so is only a rough guide not an absolute measurement. Also, the problem tends to be with speakers with too low a resistance (which will draw a higher current and potentially overheat your amp or cause clipping which can damage the speaker) so putting an 8 Ohm speaker into a system set up for 6 Ohms should be safe.

Anyway, Richers will take it back if you don't like it. So buy one, try it (start at low volume if you're worried) and return if it doesn't sound good.

Having said all that I have a 4 speaker system with no centre (and no sub) - it sounds amazing but a good centre would make it easier to get the balance right for anybody not sitting opposite the TV!
#21
Very good centre speaker. Picked it up at their last deal for £40 and have no regrets.
#22
These are fantastic value for money, if you don't have a problem with the colour! I got the dark oak floor standers so I had to shell out more for the matching colour on the centre (Peter Tyson eBay outlet).

The only thing Sony is making at the moment is people annoyed...

Let's hope they don't start selling security software.oO

It is the other way round. The L & R (front & rear) does not cover the entire freq range covered by center speakers. All 5 center speakers would be perfect. Only reason, people dont go for this is due to the higher cost of center speakers and in many cases 5 speakers lying horizontally as opposed to vertically does not give a visual appeal to many.

Are Tannoy still an independent company or does Richer Sounds own them now?

Still independent I believe.
Richer Sounds own 40% of a group that has brands such as - Cambridge Audio, Mordaunt Short and Gale.

Ah, the biker..........We meet again.

Without a doubt, you won't get a better centre speaker at this price.

I did the same as The Biker, 4 floorstanders and a centre £290- to which i added a subwoofer which cost about the same as the rest of my system put together........FYI, BK monolith, best sub £500 subwoofer on the market, by a LONG way !

to be fair, the centre speaker DOES go down quite low, if your amp allows it to :-)

tempted to buy 2 of these, and wire my bathroom for sounds !

or, if your short of space for a few days.....

very good but wheren't you a little worried the top set may have fallen off with the vibration ?

I got to admit, I love the sound of my Tannoy's , have had them for between 10 to 20 years (bookshelf 605's and floors 633's), at the time was stuck trying to pick between missions and the Tannoy's , obv Tannoy's won, love the sound during demo.

The phone has been changed since !!!!

Re. the centre falling off....

I did a great amount of research about having the centre speaker up there. the result was a GREAT increase in volume and clarity. if you have it at the bottom of the tv, by the time most of the sound gets to you, its bounced of the floor.........

its held up there with a frame made from flat bar, bolted to the back of the tv ( using the tv mount boltholes)

Vibration isnt an issue - these centre speakers have a fairly hefty steel plate at the bottom of them.

as for the AV. that was a hotukdeals/richersounds special too. its a Sony STR-DG820. £189.99 IIRC - bought a few of them. Pretty much everything you need from a av amp.

Bit of a hijack but all of you sound like you know about this kinda thing.

I'm just building a new house and I want to do a audio multi room on the cheap - £800 budget
Can any of you give me suggestions thx
#33
with spending too long : ( and im presuming its just the audio side you need....you have tv/skybox/dvd player/ps3/xbox or whatever ?

http://www.richersounds.com/product/av-receivers/sony/strdh810/sony-strdh810
£200 - takes care of the amp side of things, it'll handle all your input/outputs, and looks sweet too ( imo)

http://www.richersounds.com/product/floorstanders/tannoy/mercury-f3/tann-f3-custom-dkoak
tannoy f3 floorstanders - basic entry level stuff, but a great start. if your aiming for 5.1, i'd consider 2 sets of these, so that would be £200.
You'll need to add a centre speaker to that, then a subwoofer - so you'll be looking around another £200 for that....OR

an matched 5.1 speaker setup - decent quality kit....but its £500....
http://www.richersounds.com/product/speaker-packages/mordaunt-short/alumni-system/mord-alumni-sys-blk

remember to price in cables and interconnects too - these CAN be done on the cheap. a 50m roll of suitible speaker cable is around £30 - http://****.co.uk/Loudspeaker-Cable-50m-OFC-322-Strand-Loud-Speaker-Wire-/390308086683?pt=UK_Computing_CablesConnectors_RL&hash=item5ae02cc39b

interconnects and hdmi cables etc can be done on the cheap too - check out kenable - http://www.kenable.co.uk/

I'd take your £800 to a couple of dealers and listen to what they can offer for the money. Audio can be a quite a personal thing - as soon as you start getting recommendations on the web there'll be a Sony v Onkyo fanboy war!

Richers can be good tho' - I've been known to use a credit card to buy 4 DVD players and return the 3 I didn't like for a refund. I was upfront about it and they were quite happy (ironically I kept the one they recommended in the first place).

I agree that richersounds is a good place to start.
every time ive ever bought something from richersounds, they have always been top notch.

As for Sony VS Onkyo..........We all know that Sony is the best choice. No point in arguing over it ;-)
