Take the Tesco one back if you really want this. They give you 30 days even on computers. My mother in Law bought a Laptop from Tesco used it for a couple of weeks even loaded stuff onto it. She decided she couldn't get on with it and when she rang them up they said return it to store. She got a full refund!

Bizarre, I was in Tyldesley yesterday as a one-off for work. I live 17 miles away!

I got one of these PC's when my local Lidl reopened after a refurb, i did pay £299 bit this was over a year ago, and had no problems whsoever and its very quiet.

Its a solid well made PC and tech support is a normal landline number, i only rang once to ask if its ok to take the security tag off to ugrade the memory and phone was answered in a about 40 seconds which makes a change from waiting over a hour with my old Medion PC on a 0870 number :(

I found a review here

This machine is quite slow by todays standards and also probably contains special Targa editions inside too :(
#7
The only special edition is the graphics card, yes it may be slow compared to modern PC's but for £199 with 3 year onsite warranty must be a good buy ?

You can find the full spec here

http://www.targa.co.uk/index.jsp?SID=0&NAV=236&DOC=&PAGE=1091&PCAT=2&PROD=206&PTUBE=10&PARAMS=undefined&PARAMS2=undefined&SPCAREA=undefined

If technical support line, and a 3 year on site warranty (whatever that covers-hmmmm) is what you are after it is a good deal. This is plenty good enough for word processing and internet browsing and playing games released a couple of years ago.

In terms of being suitable to cope with a future operatinbg system upgrade to Vista (Windows XP is going out of support in 2008) - I say its worth paying a bit more for a more capable machine. No one likes the hastle of upgrading a machine and so by buying one that will last a few more years (in processing power terms) is well worth the investment.
#9
Very good value for money, especially if you already have an existing monitor, and XP is still the preferred choice for reliability.

No it isn't, they only stopped supporting '98 this year and they are still supporting 2000, the updates for XP will just start to become slightly less frequent over the next 12 months.

Spot on, and also they have just extended the shelf life for XP retail sales too,

dell have had to start selling with xp again because of customer complaints about vista

Cant find anything on their website.......

If I were to go into the store tomorrow am I likely to find one or is it an offer starting Monday?

Matt
#14
almost all the components used to make up this system are EOL, and very old..
#15
still will beat the pants of most machines in same price bracket and above, u could always amputate chip ad shove a dual core ( cheap as p#ss )
better than a dell and more upgradeable
component cons etc..
would be a very good media centre
#16
sounds like a decent machine for the price from what i read here: http://www.targa.co.uk/index.jsp?SID=0&NAV=236&DOC=&PAGE=1091&PCAT=2&PROD=206&PTUBE=10&PARAMS=undefined&PARAMS2=undefined&SPCAREA=undefined

is this available anywhere in London?

I don't understand why some people look for negative points with this deal.... For under £200 you will not get better. I own an IT business and struggle to get budget base units and systems for under £200!!

I bought one of these for my son when they first came out and paid £749. He has had no problems with the computer what so ever. He uses it for all his homework and of course surfing the net. He also manages to play most of the latest games with no problems as the graphics card is quite good and was one of the main reasons we bought it at the time, however you can upgrade your graphics card if you wish without affecting the guarantee.

For this price voted hot, just wish it was in all of the Lidl stores as I wouldnt mine getting one for my other son !

Exactly, the thread didn't say "£200 Gaming Rig".

For a basic user, this is a decent machine.

Ummmmm, What's going on here then?:?

Note the bit about taking it back to Tesco, exactly the same but 5 minutes apart and different posters.:w00t:

Looks like finicky did not use the quote facility for melcarroll's post and just did a copy & past of the text for his first paragraph.

I agree, I system build myself, and looking into it spec for spec, I would struggle to match components WITHOUT an operating system on building this spec machine for short of between £270-300.

As I say that is WITHOUT the OS.

If anyone has to spend petrol/diesel travelling and is looking for a decent budget system I wouldnt hesitate to recommend costing in the price of travel for this deal, as far as I am concerned its a Hotukdeal.

Fact is as a budget machine, it may not be a gaming rig obviously, upon saying that though the machine is very expandable even by todays standards.
#25
Great price for somebody wanting to uses it for surfing the net and doing there office work etc. Obviously it's not a games machine. And also having XP is also good until Vista sorted in a few years
#26
Not a games machine ?

I can play games fine on mine.

Heres a top tip , when i got mine on a store opening everybody went to the isle that contains the weekly specials, because of the value of the item they will be kept in the secure part of the store, so go directly to the checkout to get yours

Looks like I was wrong about XP support- mainstream XP support is available until at least 2009.
Glad my unused £50 OEM XP Pro packs have a longer shelf life then ..... I might even upgrade from 2000 soon too !
#29
In terms of turning this into a gaming machine, the chip is pretty good as far as I can tell?

I had an athlon64 3400+ with 2gb DDR400 and a Radeon X1600 pro and I ran every game out to a satisfactory level.

My motherboard's died and since it's completely un-upgradable and not worth replacing, I've been looking at this deal. After a bit of research this PC's better than my current one as far as I can tell? (apart from the amount of memory, obviously)

Any help on this would be appreciated, the hardware market's confusing as hell and I have no idea how to compare components like-for-like to know which is best.
