Cheers OP - good deal.

does this allow you to connect a laptop to a desktop computer or is this just to connect to keyboard & mouse etc?
#8
what do you mean by that?
no you can't... if you want to share files between 2 pcs use a lan cable
#9
ok. i wasn't sure what the laptop was supposed to be "docking" onto. does anyone konw a way of syncing a laptop to a desktop (i.e. not just transferring files - the way you can sync a pda to a desktop)
#10
wired or wireless lan

what I mean is this... you know the way a PDA can sync to a desktop and the most recent of each file / contact / email etc. is sent to both the desktop and the PDA. I would like a similar setup between my desktop and my laptop. As far as I am aware you can't do this over a LAN.

I think you can use the briefcase thing in windows for that. But will probably only work for just files.

I agree with steffcip, LAN would be the best way to do it - a laptop isn't a 'slave' like a PDA is in a PC/PDA setup so it works at a different level. When you say you want to sync your contact and email information, is it Outlook you are using? What you'd probably want is some file sync software and mount one computer as a share for the other - the software would compare the files on each machine and then update whichever machine was out of date.

Although this is a port replicator rather than a docking station, the idea behind the technology is that you can use your laptop as a desktop while at work say, with a desktop monitor, keyboard, mouse LAN cable etc. and then when you go home in the evening you can just take the laptop out of the dock. When you come back in the next day again you have just one connection to make rather than many.

You can pick up 4 port USB hubs very cheaply, e.g. at Poundland when in stock which would give you eight ports for an extra £2 :) or ebay:-

http://cgi.ebay.xxxxx ( USB 2, looks identical to the ones sold in Poundland)

or

http://cgi.ebayxxxxx (USB 1.1)

mod edit - removed ebay links

those cheap usb hubs are good for nothing.... I will not buy more from ebay

Hi mcl, welcome to hukd's :) I've removed the links in your post as we do not allow them in the forums.
