Cheap formal shoes are a bit of a false economy. One pair, you wear for one year and look crap, vs a half decent goodyear welted pair you can use for years and years and that will look great if you take of them. Actually I think older decent shoes look better as they get older. Anyway, rant over, just my opinion.

The only issue with these will be the quality and comfort in the sole, but good value nonetheless

It's alright saying that.... I wear Barker's which cost me between £200 & £300 but not everyone has the money to get maintainable shoes and at a mere £16 these shoes will suit a lot of people. Heat from me.

I bought the Taylor & Wright Premium Wingtip shoes a while back (even took pictures) http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/premium-leather-brogues-from-42-16-matalan-online-free-c-c-2477039?p=28425977 and I'm told they are really comfortable and sturdy - this is coming from an incredibly fussy person, too!

Edit: Actually, from reading that thread, quite a few speculated whether they were "Genuine Leather" but it seems Matalan made a boo-boo with the website description - they plainly are, as you can see from the stickers/labels.

Agreed. I wear formal business wear everyday and walk 2-3 miles a day.

I start off buying £40 formal shoes which wore out in 4-6 months, and even when re-healed looked old.

Then I finally spent £160 on a pair of Loake goodyear welted shoes in 2013 and I've replaced the entire soul and heal once in 2 years (£40). It will take a while to break even, but they are incredibly comfortable, and the calf skin leather has got a nice crease to it.

There's no soul (sic) in Loake but it might have soles!

The explanation is in evident from exactly what he wrote.

For £16, I don't think you can go wrong with genuine leather shoes, even if they only last one season.

Got a pair of Kurt Geiger boots for £60 in a sale , originally £250 in 2005, still going strong, but for £16 these look ok and will probably last a season ,seem much better than others

I just posted a pair that was like 62 quid! You can get plenty of deals on sales, don't need to spend £200 at all if you shop around.

A good make is gordon and bros: https://www.trendfuxx24.de/schuhe/gordon-bros/gordon-und-bros-schuhe-levet-4365-schwarz-rahmengenaeht-sparpreis?sPartner=5140509&gclid=CIjfpPqDsdMCFXAz0wodRdkDqA (109 euros)

Or j.briggs on amazon which I have if you like chunkier (built like tanks too) : https://www.amazon.co.uk/J-Briggs-Goodyear-Brogue-Lace-Up-schwarz/dp/B004APTKH0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1492622538&sr=8-1&keywords=j+briggs

Here's a brown brogue with stitched down lacing panel https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gordon-Bros-Levet-Mens-Derby/dp/B00IOTN58I/ref=pd_sim_309_4?_encoding=UTF8&refRID=1138KJMHG829MFWPPWHB (139 quid)

Haven't tried these, but commando soled brown brogue for 64 quid. GYW. https://www.amazon.co.uk/LEATHER-BROGUE-COMMANDO-WELTED-SHOES/dp/B0171U4HZ0/ref=sr_1_1?s=shoes&ie=UTF8&qid=1492622635&sr=1-1&nodeID=355005011&psd=1&keywords=brogue+commando+sole

I don't think you understand my comment. I want Barker's. I don't want the makes you have very kindly suggested to me. I was merely saying that if you only have £16 or so to spend then the post is ideal. I hope I've made it clear enough for you.

Wow these are small sizes. I am an eleven, occasionally ten, but I bought size elevens and can't even get them on my feet, Back they go!
