5W RMS is not to be confused with Peak Music Power values.

http://sound.westhost.com/power.htm

"I have a set of computer speakers that are rated at 480W PMPO (yes - four hundred and eighty Watts). I have measured them at less than 5W each before clipping. There is no rhyme or reason that can explain such a difference, except ...."

Worth reading how the values are calculated.

TLDR

1W RMS is approx equal to 12-14w PMPO

So for us simpletons, does that mean the output of this bar may not actually be that bad?

The phillips one was not listed as RMS and as such 30W will be peak.
So that 30W you expected in truth would be closer to 3-4W RMS at best with a lot of distortion.
Tend to believe or trust manufacturers more that will give the RMS figures.
The PMPO scam has been going on for a lot of years and is exactly why people are so confused.

I very much doubt anyone will ever watch a film with these at 100%.
However, nothing to say these are not going to distort etc, but at least its Amazon and their returns policy is good.
