While this is very clever/useful - it is strange MS has not made it default for Windows tablets - including RT and Surface (Pro). You'd think with the size of Windows and people complaints they would have done so already?

My only reservation is that unless they push service packs as before to update image itself - with the monthly patches you will end up after a year with increasing differences to image. You can clean-up replaced updates but you cannot if they're part of the image - you'd have to recreate it.

They should really have the image working similar to full-disk encryption, i.e. small decompressor loading compressed Windows image + compressed patches automatically without all the rigmarole of creating images. Perhaps in Windows 8.2?
To be clear this is for use with cheap SSD's like the one here... http://www.ebuyer.com/519465-kingston-30gb-ssdnow-ms200-msata-drive-sms200s3-30g

Can give a real performance boost to old laptops for under £30.

I have an old HP desktop computer running XP. Can i install this on it?

You could but it won't give any advantage without an SSD. In fact without a SSD this may slow things down.

if you do this do you get any certificates?

If you meant the MS will issue you a certificate for doing the courses in the OP link then no. This is just a help in gaining the certification If you have already tried it you will have experienced that it does teach you good practical skills. You will still have to take an exam to gain certification so you can put it on CV. But time and time again I've seen that when you start a job and you see an opportunity where you can show your skill in a project you can jump at the chance. Then you can put your commercial experiences on the CV this will help you progress. So with no money spent you can still show employers your capabilities.

FYI The link give more info on how to gain the certifications

You can do the courses without an account but if you create it in

microsoftvirtualacademy

You can earn points which you can download the progress charts. I don't know how much it might help with employers but you have learnt the skills. Also the online experts can help you to move along. I think MS is trying to get IT professional or starter to gain the skills. I think it's great.

I hope it helps.

Hi...This definitely looks like something I would do, but I only have my vista machine. Do i need to install/use servers?

Where would I start im lost? (BTW I definitely need it to "update" by cv skills, and make me more appealing to employers...

I am glad you want to further your skills this will definitely help you.

From the link it should take you to page where there are 10 exercises to complete

Using Configuration Manager 2007 to Perform Your Most Common and Critical Desktop Management Tasks

for e.g. the 1st one is

Operating System Deployment which has one article and three video. Once you have done that try the Lab in which they get you to follow a step by step instruction. These should be simple for evev a non IT to follow.

The lessons and lab should work in all OP with internet access.

Try it good luck.

Okay, it downloaded as an image file, what do I do now, do I have to burn it to a cd or is there a way around it as my laptop doesn't have a cd drive.
Pity people are voting cold, I think this is just what I was looking for, thank you for posting. And having tried the free office software and free Operating Systems, I have come back to MS as the freebies can't match the quality. You really do get what you pay for.
I swear the copy that I got for free lasts longer than 60 days.
MSOffice is Dodo territory. Have legit copies of various iterations that I don't bother digging out - install libre office and just for fun Word for Windows version 2 as a reminder that office wasn't always a complete bloater.
