I posted this just after tesco put it back on sale after taking it away due to having problems and complaints it looks to have been fixed now.

I got this hd recorder the next day, and have been using it since and I have not found a single problem with it, It was easy to set up and with the built-in wifi it updated the firmware as i was setting it up, I was impressed with the whole of the features including iplayer and the usb port to transfare recordings to another HDD so you will never fill the built-in 320GB one, You can also stream video/pic/mp3 that you put from the pc on to the hdd or usb stick. you can even tell it to record something from the online tv guide ( i did this when england played during the week)

There is no reason to vote this down now.

The Technika SmartBox 8320HD is the first Freeview+HD digital TV recorder to let you watch and record stunning High Definition programmes from Freeview HD and with upscaling of up to 50 standard definition digital TV channels and twin freeview HD tuners, will transform your TV experience and help you get the best out of your HD television. The SmartBox includes a 320GB hard drive with 2 USB ports that let you export and store programmes on an external hard drive. Connect the SmartBox to broadband with WiFi or an Ethernet cable and activate FetchTV and you will also get access to a wealth of online content and services direct to your TV including Sky Player, BBC iPlayer, Fetch on Demand and more. With thousands of hours of movies and TV on demand, FetchTV is just like DVD rental, without having to go to the store. There is an 8 day one screen programme guide, as well as, an online TV guide with remote recording capability to set recordings on your SmartBox when you are on the go. The Technika SmartBox 8320HDs built in Media Centre also makes it easy to share photos, music and video from your PC to your TV. Universal remote control and HDMI cable included.

Can anyone else confirm that this is now ok. I really want to get one but im not going to shell out £200 until i know its working properly.

Have you really had no problems at all? I must have a bad one then - crashing/freezing, picture breaking up, failed recordings - the list goes on...
#3
I would hold on buying one until, the "bugs" have been sorted out for sure.

wow a 200 quid gamble on an unproven Technika box of crap.
I'd rather bet 200 quid for England to beat Germany on Sunday

I refuse to believe the OP hasn't had a 'single problem'..
I own one, I have problems with it everyday if I try an duse it as designed and advertised.
It DOES crash less than it used to, but at the same time, I push it less, for fear it will crash...

Still not worth it.

After 1st speaking with cs to confirm they had these in stock, I could not believe my luck he told me they are on a managers special promo for £100!

But to good to be true they could not sell me it, when scanned said product recall, they were immdeiately taken off the shop floor. what a wasted journey:x

So your guide populates properly, every time it boots?
So your series link works properly, without giving warnings?
So your accurate recording works?

Strange if it does, as NO-ONE elses does .....

And that's just the CORE functionality I'm referring to, don't get me started on the rest of the 'features' for reliability...

^-- that yellow label does not refer to the box above it. That label, and the £100 price tag, is for the standard HD receiver STBHDV2010 which is available at tescodirect for £100.

The 8320 SmartBox is available to purchase from tescodirect and is no longer the subject of a withdrawal.

oh yes it was the price as it was a managers special promo and the manager himself said if he cud of he wud of let me have it for £100! but makes no odds anyways as they would not sell them as it came up on checkout to withdraw that batch of that product

I got to say that, despite a few bugs, I think maybe I've got use to the wireless N networking, internet access on the TV, the built in iPlayer/SKYplayer, and I think I'd find it very difficult to lose these features now..........however, it does have it's bugs, but to be honest these aren't a major hinderence to my personal use.

Would also add that I've now had the PACE and Sagemcom HD PVR's, and each has had it's own set of frustrating bugs and problems (in fact I've never had a PVR without any bugs - apart from the old TiVo). However, I've been impressed with how quickly FetchTV have put out their updates and attempted to address these bugs. I know we're effectively beta testing these units, but to me it's a matter of having HD now in time for the world cup and putting up with the bugs, or getting a (nearly) bug-free box in 8 weeks time and missing the world cup in HD - easy decision for me, especially when Tesco offer their 28 day no quibble money back guarentee.

Well I'm grateful for the post -- been looking for these to come back on sale.

I'm actually less bothered about the HD than I am about the media player functions -- this is effectively a £150 box to me as it means I can sell my WDTV on.

Cheers bud. Heat added.

Not so fast - it doesn't have DTS downmix so won't replace a WDTV Live and it also has problems playing my MP4 Handbrake conversions of DVD rips - strangely it plays MKV high def Bluray rips fine (apart from DTS audio). I have this PVR and am keeping my WDTV Live.

Thanks for the headup Simon -- I guess I'll just have to check it out now as it's already on the way lol.

When you say it doesn't have downmix, forgive me for my ignorance here (I've been a bit out of the loop recently) but is this necessarily an issue? If you have a DTS-capable surround receiver can it not just pass through the data?

I'm also quite happy to transcode from my Linux server if needs be, it's got the horsepower to spare.
