I'm sure I looked at the OP earlier to see if I was missing a discount code, either it wasn't there or I was very tired this morning, LOL... anyway thanks I'm now mulling over whether to get one of these or wait to see if either an HD version of playtv comes out or the price of freeview HD recorders drops to a reasonable price.

They've also dropped the STBHDIS2010 to £70, for which the TDX-L24F discount code also works.

Still no confirmation on which one is better though. (For those interested in following this, i've asked the question on avforums, here)

Anyone know what the upscaling of SD channels is like on either of these boxes?

I've tried the Technika Smartbox HDR , and that's upscaling was extremely good, but that's no guarantee either of these will be equally good. (incidentally, returned the Smartbox due to numerous serious firmware bugs)

Personally I'd wait - access to an additional 4 HD channels on their own simply isn't worth £50.
If good SD upscaling was assured, then i'd think about it..... but I'm of the mind that if i'm going to buy a Freeview HD box, I might as well get PVR functionality at the same time.

Unfortunately there is currently nothing on the market that combines all of the following:

- Freeview HD channels
- good SD upscaling,
- full PVR functions (including iplayer & other digital download services).
- *no significant bugs*
- ~£150.

On the plus side, the price of set-top boxes coming down should force HDRs down too.

I think the DIS one is newer than the DV one, also:

DIS

Product Depth 18.93 cm
Product Height 3.7 cm
Product Width 25 cm

DV

Product Depth 17 cm
Product Height 4 cm
Product Width 29.5 cm

DIS is 2cm deeper but a whole 5cm less wide.

edit: my technika tv is amazing so i wouldn't right off the whole brand but because the £20 hmdi hitachi freeview box i got from argos does 720p/1080i and looks amazing and has a great and fast epg i really couldn't be doing with a rubbish upscaler/rubbish with SD box or one with a terrible epg. Although i could keep the old box and just switch over for hd, hmmmm

The ariel doesnt have to be on a chimney though, does it?

Not mandatory, but a good ariel is advisable for acceptable reception - especially in regions that are not running their HD transmitters at full power yet.

For where I am (Aberdeen) after the switch over freeview power increases from 13,333 W to 75,000 W, which makes frreview 5 times stronger. Go here and search for your transmitter and find the bit about "Digital switchover process details" and it should tell you how much better freeview will be getting. At the moment i have an indoor Philex SLX 27769r which was £11.99, which is by far the best aerial i have ever had and that gets all the channels as well as HD, just need to turn it completely in the opposite direction for film4! So hopefuly after the switch over people who have big indoor aerials could switch to discrete ones.

Looks like the discount code expired. They're £70 but that's still a super deal compared to some Freeview HD boxes! But you can win one, and that's FREE!

Freeview HD is giving away five Technika Freeview HD boxes via a Twitter competition. To enter, all you have to do is follow @FreeviewHD and retweet their competition tweet. Competition ends Thursday 2 September, 5pm. You can read the full competition rules and the T&Cs on the Freeview blog http://****/b0Y1nK
