Technika Twin Scart Digital TV Receiver
Model number ECO 2STBA08

£9.97 seems like a good price for a simple set top box. I have been looking for new one for a few days and been struggling to get anything below £17.

Was instore on offer at Coventry Cannon Park, so I'm assuming it's elsewhere too

Looks identical to this Aurex one on eBuyer, but in black

Cheers, needing a couple of cheapies and as you say they still retail around that price most place! H&R!

i had a similar one a while ago but it blew up (was Duraband rather than Thecnika but looked the same). One of the components inside exploded causing it to smoke and scorch the casing, luckily i was there when it happened and pulled the plug. I wasn't even watching it at the time, it was on stand-by. It was a good box when it was working though, hopefully the components are a little better.

pardon my ignorance but do u use this device to view freeview on tvs? does it have any other functions? also, why the need for two scart sockets? many thanks.

The 2 scart sockets allow for one to go direct to TV and the other to a VCR or hard-disk recorder.
Useful for the older hard-disk recorders and VCRs that don't have on-board free-view tuners that people may still be using.

Sainsburys are doing one for £16.90p or so.

Picked one up yesterday for my sister and got to say that it's pretty good considering the price.

I had this unit and it kept turning itself off every few minutes.
The remote that comes with these is universal throughout the technika brand and i often get technika products back due to faulty remotes.

I have found very cheap freeview boxes to be very frustrating with lockups, terrible UI and often overheating. personally I would just pay the extra tenner for a branded one.

Having used the box for the first time last night, the interface is really simple and straightforward, has a good now and next graphic for every channel, and was up and running with minimal fuss.

Having owned a branded Phillips one last time round, and experienced fairly constant problems with it, I don't think buying branded guarantees you anything really.

I have a technika freeview in the spare bedroom (although it is a silver one). I've had it for about 4 years. I have also purchased an additional 3 boxes as gifts for family. The last one was purchased May 2008. 4 years ago mine cost £29. Last year I paid £19. They are all still working perfectly. Absolutely no complaints & I would recommend them to anyone.

I chose the technika because it had 2 scarts to facilitate vcr connection and also Tesco never seem to have a problem with a refund if things go wrong.

Very good price, great deal - doubtful of the stock level at cannon park though

Does it have a 7-day EPG?
Danestone Aberdeen was out of stock, but there was an empty box on the shelf. The blurb mentioned EPG, but didn't state whether it was 7 day or not.

Usually not 7 days at around that price

Seems to be a standard Vestel clone box, in which case it has the Cabot software and thus does have a 7 day EPG.

Software on these is pretty good but they're built to a price, and as such might not be 100% reliable. Some batches seem OK, others not.
