Is that one better than the Humax HD box for about the same price?

Yes, mostly because with a USB Hard drive or memory stick this has PVR functionality which the humax doesnt have

Maybe being a bit thick here but does anyone know if this would work abroad?
(I know the voltage is different but would use a continental adaptor)
Am not permitted to put any form of dish on the apartment!

This is a freesat HD box, you need the freeview HD box...

How will Freeview be any use if he is abroad?!

If you can't put up a dish, or don't have access to a feed from an existing suitable dish then you can't get Freesat.

Also note that iPlayer is coming to the Technicsat HDFS on the 16th March which is also a massive bonus

http://www.joinfreesat.co.uk/index.php/bbc-iplayer-to-launch-on-technisat-harvard

Also the technisat was voted the best HD Freesat reciever by What Satallite magazine in a group test

This is the thing that puts me off:

Recordings can only be played back on the HDFS unit on
which they were recorded.

These comments on amazon feedback put me off:

.....as you can not delete channels, is most irritating .... (same I have with the Sky box now :()

.......absence of explicit keys on the remote control unit for PVR use (no play/pause/record/... keys present) together with stupid use of the color keys, using the box becomes annoying and unnecessarily complex.

But the worst missing function is:
It can play MPEG and MP3 files. No other format. (NO Xvid, avi, or any form of compression means huge file size)

For me it's either pay for the Humax PVR or wait for an upgrade :(

No box is perfect, the PVR function was via a firmware update hence the remote control was not designed with PVR controls. Its won 5 star awards, with the SD and HD picture quality being highlighted. I think £20 more than the Humax HD for the recording functions is well worth it, and much cheaper than the Humax HDR. The box is not designed to be a media player, is the Humax? better to buy a WD HD box if you want a good media player.

Good price. I'm tempted but hate all the channels showing up in the tv guide that I can't watch. Can anyone verify this still happens with a freesat box as it does with my old sky box?

Good news No encrypted channels will show on the freesat EPG, unlike using an old Sky box

Even better, you can define your two "favourite lists", so you don't even have to see the junk that you are able to watch, but never do.

Bought mine from Amazon for more than this but vs the Humax this wins but only for the PVR function.
