Good idea, but isn't this the one shown on Watchdog recently, that kept bursting into flames because the fan failed?

The one and only, people steer clear!

That's not a valid reason to make it cold though.

Those people left the thing running and went away. One even left the house and went shopping! Yep, the fan failing is an issue I agree, but you wouldn't leave a Chip Pan unattended and this is basically a chip pan, so why should this be any different?

They use these in costco when they cook samples. All of the staff love them and I've only ever heard good things about them. They are an excellent cooker.

But I did see the watchdog tv show where the fan can fail and I'm guessing this has caused the drop in price recently.

Why, are you trying to do away with her?!:whistling:

I have one of these and my previous one had a fan failure. Despite this, I elected for a replacement rather than a refund - as they are exceptional pieces of kit. They also did not 'burst into flames' and there have been no major incidents with this - which if you compare to the number of chip fan fires in the country......

Anyway, great price and good product.

Is there any realistic way of getting this device at £83.95 and pick up/reserve at store?
#11
would like to know too appealing at nearer 80 but not so at 90 :P
#12
HOT deal - quite literally!

I wouldnt take that risk... this product should be recall!
#15
Surely the difference between a chip-pan fire and this thing is that a chip-pan will not catch fire unless the user has done something wrong (over-filled it, left it on the hob too long, knocked it over), whereas this can potentially cause an electrical fire without any misuse from the operator. Sorry, but I find that worrying!

I've expired this cos Argos have pulled 2 of voucher (bah humbug)

That makes no sense whatsoever

0.4% of these have failed - and none of them have caused fires. The most that has happened is black smoke has been emitted.

If you didn't vote for anything which had a 0.4% failure rate, everything would be cold.

It is as valid a reason as any I can think of... especially as they take about 45 minutes to cook a batch of chips - 45 mins is a long time to be standing staring at it, so I would suspect most people WOULD be leaving it!

Most gear that "fails" just doesn't work - and most won't require you to redecorate & replace the kitchen, or claim on your house insurance!

And how many people have had a fire or had to redecorate their kitchen - the answer is = 0

Still, why let facts get in the way of an uninformed rant.

What's the matter are Tefal shares dropping a bit?

Odd how many people on here rush to defend plain old lousy products sold by enormous companies who ought to be producing safe goods instead of rubbish.

"TÜV Product Service compliance services manager Richard Poate, who tested the Actifry for Watchdog, said: "Anything that emits that degree of smoke and fire could have potential catastrophic effects. This is a fundamental design issue that should have been detected very, very easily. All the safety standards require you to simulate failures like motor failure, fan failure, and how this got past the safety testing is really quite beyond me. In my opinion, there should be a recall."

Still, never let words like "castastrophic" suffice when real video is better:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/watchdog/2008/11/chip_pans_up_in_smoke.html

I can be pretty certain you will need redecoration and a bit of replacing after all the smoke you see on there gets through your kitchen, or maybe a bit further into other rooms! Make sure you take the dog or cat, out too... Leave a pet in there at the same time, and you can add in the cost of a lot of family grief, disposal and replacement!

If I could be sure of one going up like that, my kitchen could do with a bit of work, and that would be as good a way as any to get it done cheaply without all the risk of a full-on chip pan fire.
#23
Voted, 17 quid cheaper than Costco and I've never had a problem with mine.

So you have no personal experience of one failing then?

Nihcaj - Why not try understanding the difference between "catastrophic" and "potentially catastrophic" - it is potentially catastrophic to fly by aeroplane.

Lets vote all train deals down, because they can derail and people can die.
Don't bother talking about any flight deals - we all know how they can end.

Thinking about a holiday? Forget Egypt, India, Bali - all of these places (and many more I am sure) have kidnapped / killed British citizens.

Any trips to New York should also be voted cold - and I am sure you can work out why.

Same thing for any deals to Lisbon or even London.

All have had ' catastrophic' events.

Now try getting some grip on reality eh?

Well you could have broken it down to 'Everything in life has risk to some extent' ;-)

As to the actifry the odds are about 1:210 of it going wrong. Had it been made by bush it would have probably been closer to 1:20 but people still buy that tat without moaning. Go figure:)
#31
If it's a 0.4% faliure rate would not be 1:996
#32
I've had one since early August, yet to have it explode in my face and we use it at least 3 times a week. I'd hate to see 360 deals if the mentality was the reliability is more important than the deal :-|

Voting hot, considering getting one for my brothers house warming

:?
That would mean only 50 complaints from a 50k sample (rounded). It's actually closer to 1:250 now I think about it. See a big improvement in reliability already

Yer but does it do deep-fried Marsbars:p
