I'm on my 3rd in just over a year... great items... but very prone to the fan breaking, overheatng and catching fire...

It basically works like a toaster, there is a heater element that glows red like a toaster, and a fan blows the heat onto your food to cook it, as soon as the fan breaks, the heating element overheats and can catch fire...

I have no idea however where the RRP of £179 comes from as I got mine from Costco and paid just over £90... and as far as I am aware, as I just had to replace mine for the second time 3 weeks ago, they are still only about £94 with VAT included at Costco now... so even at £114 its not a great deal... never mind £179...
And if you can get to a Tefal Outlet you will get one for around £65. I bought one at the Castleford Prime Outlets and it is as new and worked fine for 6 months! But good high street price I guess.
Yeah, I heard these are quite prone to self-combustion.

Didn't know that....is Castleford the nearest one to Manchester do you know?
epic design fail then.. why couldnt they just put a kill switch when the fan breaks.................. *sigh* deigned by designers and not engineers obviously..
yeah lets all buy them, and die in house fires.

sounds like a good product apart from that special feature
I got one recently - didnt know about the design fault then - and it stopped working after 2 months. Luckily it stopped working rather than went on fire
Got one from Amazon, went kaput after the year warranty...loud bang and lots of smoke. Must have had less than 50 uses in total. After much threatening to take Amazon to the small claims court Amazon refunded me the £100 I paid when it was on offer here on HUKD. Methinks they know about the design flaw.

There was a piece on watchdog about these too.

Average price for a dangerous item.
Good deal, £175 ish everywhere else!

Went and picked one up this afternoon and cooked myself some nice chips for dinner :)

Also Makro have these on offer at £99+VAT (£113.85) from today.
It's not as bad as it looks. Tefal still deny that there was any design fault in the original version (the one that had a tendency to cook itself as well as the chips). However, they have kindly redesigned it (remember - there was no fault on the original) and any retailer with a good turnover of stock should have the new model.

I gather John Lewis have the redesigned version (probably Argos too) but although the stores have been told about the Argos price they're keeping their price at £174.95 - so much for 'never knowingly undersold' policy which says that:

If we miss one, and a customer finds that one of our products is sold for a lower price by another local retailer, we will lower our shelf price so that all customers benefit, rather than just the customer who spotted it.

If you want one from John Lewis, you might have to work for it a bit!
I don't see the point in voting this cold - its a good price whether you like the product or not. Its like voting a pram cold just because you don't have kids.
I'm gonna try the Castleford park this weekend and try and get one for £65. We borrowed one of these off the inlaws recently and I thought it was great. And our house didn't burn down. Yet.
The recipe book that comes with it is fun. The chicken and pineapple dish is great. But best is good old chips or tatty wedges! It is a handy device and we use it lots. Get good quality meatballs and it cooks them up while the pasta boils then throw it all together with a sauce. Less energy than firing up the oven and waiting for it to heat up. Just make sure you get decent quality meatballs as cheap ones fall apart in it.
Went to Castleford today and theres none left in the Tefal outlet

Might be better to avoid the outlet ones, anyway. Possibly they're the recycled and repaired fire damaged ones. If not, they're probably the pre-modification version, which will be much more likely to fail on you.
