H+R - never knew there were alternative editions of the film.
#2
Ordered!
The standard T2 blu ray release was sadly lacking in extras and this version more than makes up for it,
three versions of the film (adding lots to the terminator story) and a whole ream of features. Bargain.

No. Steelbook version is £24.99 and sold out on Zavvi.

The original T2 release on blu ray has a rather average/disappointing transfer. Is this the same, or is the picture improved as well?

Unfortunately the steelbook version was a limited edition release which has sold out at all online retailers, You will only find it on ebay & in the odd shop here & there. This is the same release without the stellbook exterior.

Good find, heat added - been after this one a while

I've only just got a PS3 so I dont have any blu-rays yet, but I've heard that many old films just aren't worth it, they don't gain anything from the transition to HD. I already have one of the many uber editions of this on DVD, with the extra scenes, scripts, T2 3-D feature etc - is it worth picking this one up in Blu-Ray?

(I love the film)

Heat added still for a good price.
#11
If only it was this edition...

Nice find Heat added, something to watch over Xmas.

Thank you, thank you. I, too, have been waiting for this. Can't wait to view the alternative ending!

I guess it depends on what you're equipment is capable of throwing out. I just got a PS3 and don't have a HD TV. What I do have is a 720 projector which receives both the PS3 and my DVD player routed via component through a Denon AV receiver. With this I can switch between the DVD and BluRay quickly and the improvement of quality of BluRay was on this particular set up was marginal. A bit more detail and colours a little more naturalistic. I only have the one BluRay disc which is Starship Troopers and I have the first R1 DVD release. Although I'll try to buy any new discs on BluRay I don't feel it's worth upgrading all my favourite DVDs.

Compared to the DVD version the image quality is VASTLY improved. There is some DNR-ing going on but still....
Heres an image comparison..

DVD
Skynet BD
not the best image to use but its the only one I can find that works on my work PC.

The standard crappy version is clearly a separate blu ray on their website with a different price so you would be able to complain & get the skynet version.
For some unknown reason people seem to think the only skynet version is the steelbook edition, When this is the same as the steelbook edition but with a normal blu ray case exterior .

Standard blu ray £6.95

Looking at those two still images is it really a VAST improvement? Improvement yes but VAST? It's a bit sharper and a bit more detailed as a result but when you're looking at a moving image how much of that difference is going to register?.

I personally believe that generally it has been older films that have been more worthwhile in getting the Blu Ray.

The quality varies from film to film as it depends on the original source and also how much it has been tampered with for Blu Ray as sometimes they overdo it with digital enhancing which means it's not as good as could be.

Best thing to do is really get yourself a Lovefilm 30day free subscription and test out some older films in order to make a decision if it's for you or not.

I've watched quite a few but Close Encounters of The Third Kind and The Abyss where the ones that sold me on Blu Ray. Both looked like they'd been shot yesterday.

Generally do a search on Blu Ray review before purchase and will give an idea if worthwhile (although they do get a bit techy).

Personally I do a pro's and con's between the price and how good the picture quality is, usually deducting dvd price from the Blu Ray. Ie: If Blu Ray is £7/8 and dvd is £3/4, would I rebuy the Blu Ray at a later date if I saw it in a "bargain" for £3-5.

IGN review....

Video and Presentation

This film was first released on Blu-ray back in 2006, and it got a nice remastering at that time, which looks like it hasn't been messed with for this release. Despite being almost two decades old, the picture looks as good as it did when it first came out, possibly even better. Sharp and crisp, with very little color degradation, it holds up whether you're looking at the bright, golden flames of the film's opening credit sequence to the rich, dark blues of the night scenes. Sarah's dreams of an atomic blast, originally shot with a high contrast and saturated colors, look especially vibrant. There may be a few specks of dirt here and there, and you may notice some natural film grain, but they don't detract at all from the clean picture or the fine level of detail throughout. This is the best looking version of T2 we've seen for the home environment.

Score: 9 out of 10
(I PERSONALLY HAVE THE STEELBOOK BUT STILL A BARGAIN FOLKS)...

Ordered and heated, I'll be selling off my other T2, prob get at least a fiver for it, so this will work out at a few quid in the end. Thank you, or should I say damn you! :P

Heat/Rep given!

My all-time favourite movie (saw it 17 times at cinema and countless times on VHS, Laser Disc and DVD!).

Ordered using £1 off text code and via Quidco (3%). :-D

That's my sixth Blu-Ray I've ordered from bargains posted on these forums and yet to buy a Blu-Ray player! :whistling:

Thanks.

Cheekster.

Don't get your hopes up - it's pants.

The extended version of the film is worth watching with quite a few deleted scenes put back in , but the alternate ending is pretty poor. I won't say what happens , but it contradicts the continuity of the later films
#27
Cheers just ordered so have some heat and rep!

That can only be a good thing in my mind. well, for T3 anyway. I haven't actually watched Salvation yet.

Bearing in mind those pictures aren't a fully accurate representation though.

Does anyone know if the transfer on this is up to par with the fantastic German HD-DVD release?

+1. Blade Runner Directors Cut is also incredible on Blu-Ray - really brings the film to life.
Funnily enough Coming to America also amazed me as it's a really brilliant transfer. Doesn't look like it was filmed in the 80's.

HD is generally always worth it if viewing on a large panel I believe. I have a 50inch plasma and even with the awesome Cyberlink 9 DVD player with upscaling, DVD stll is not a patch on blu-ray. Unless the HD transfer is simply upscaled DVD (rare now I think) it's much better to send a 720p or 1080p image to a 1080p native panel than upscaled 540i (pal dvd).

Thanks for the great deal. Wanted to get T2 in HD for years. Think it's time I did. Loving the BD offers at the moment, though not sure my wallet does. :-D
