Comes with a SCART lead so hopefully it has at least one socket!

It has one SCART socket I think:

Was you talking about the TV or DVD?

Thank you Ray

Hmmm a contrast ratio of 500cd/m2 for a 40 inch screen? Sounds very low to me...
#12
With this having the Samsung panel, I think it's an excellent deal! Choosing between ViewSonic posted today, that would sway me to buy this one...

Sorry, I meant the TV comes with a SCART lead so probably has 1 or more sockets (more would be better). Didn't think you would be interested in SCART sockets on the DVD player for some reason but I guess it wouldn't hurt to have one!

Shame it doesnt have freeview

Well, a freeview box can be had for <£20 nowadays.

Anyway, if you're buying a 40" TV, most freeview channels will look pretty poor on it. Some are watchable (4mbit+), but some are poor and many even worse than that.

Personally, I'd advise not buying this if you only intend to watch Freeview. If you have a good DVD player it might be worth it, although with movies you're better off with a plasma or good DLP rear projector, due to the higher contrast. Genuine HD sources are still expensive in Sky HD, although Telewest isn't too bad - although neither really is that good by comparison with a Bluray or HDDVD, which will likely set you back £400+.

That's the brightness, and is fine (although not as good as plasmas). The contrast ratio is 1200:1, which is good/excellent by LCD standards, although DLPs have 3000:1, and plasmas 10,000:1.

No mention of respnse time though, this is quite important to gamers.

Also Aldi run out of stock fast when it comes to stuff like this, so be ready at the store when it opens first thing and queue with all the oldies
#18
personally i wouldn't get one a tv that is, samsung panel doesn't mean anything, its the components inside etc... the only upside is the warranty and aldi's no quiblle returns policy, had the 32" last year, and returned it , price coming down on more reputable manufactures, got myself a tosh 32 ,
#19
I'm always amused by how awful Freeview looks on all these 26inch+ LCD/Plasmas yet manages to come out looking pretty good at 80inches on my high-def projector. Watching Neighbours is quite an experience when Harold Bishop literally dominates the room.

- i have to disagree with you matie, free view in my experience has been excellent on my 42" LG Plamsa.

When I first got my Toshiba 32" HD set, freeview looked much better than the telewest I was receiving.

But since upgrading to TVdrive with Telewest, freeview looks awful now.

What a thoroughly unlovely image :-)

Anyway, projectors are a whole different ball game. Aside from the minor point that your projector/screen setup will cost considerably more than these LCDs, the tech is just better suited to blowing up to large sizes.

Anybody know if the dvd player upscales?

Hi, Yes, this DVD Player does upscale. This is a feature that, from the best of my understanding is not often included on a machine in this price bracket. Makes this a good buy compared to the one that eBuyer are selling for £49.99 IMHO as this does not upscale (unless i'm mistaken).

yes i heard that if you dont have sky hd your pictures are awful, like looking at a small jpg stretched on a big screen so is it really worth it yet, im not sure. I want a big screen tv but unless i buy HDTV there doesnt seem much point, and HDTV isnt standard yet :(
#31
The DVD player upscales :)

Copied the HD explanation from Sky's website:

The TV you watch at home is broadcast using a format called PAL. A PAL picture displays 576 visible rows of pixels on the screen whilst High Definition uses 720 lines scanned progressively or 1080 lines with interlaced scanning meaning that more than four times the number of pixels are used to create the picture, giving you much more detail than previously seen on television. Does anyone know if the DVD player has component out?

Does anyone know if the DVD player has component out?

Hi, Cannot find these details for certain but there seems to be a Green, Blue and Red RCA Jack on the back of the unit in the current Aldi flyer (unless i'm mistaken which is quite possible). Checked the specification online and there's no mention of component out though. Think that there's a 15-pin VGA Component Video connector as well but, as with the Component Out i'm not 100% on this.

Edited 15:20 04/09/06.

An interesting read on this HDMI DVD Player offering from Aldi can be found here:

http://www.dv-rec.de/test/player2006/Tevion/8000/8000.html
- From the pics on this page I think that there are Component Out connectors
